Bullying

In my opinion, bullying is a very important issue in schools today. When most people ponder about bullying, they think about physical bullying, such as punching or choking. Now, verbal bullying is a much bigger issue than fistfights. Recently, at my school, someone anonymously stole a student's phone out of their locker. They began to send nefarious text messages to other students at the school. The student was horrified, and persisted that she never wrote anything like that. The teachers never found out who stole the cell phone, and the student never got it back.

Someone should not have to feel the pain of such atrociousness. Sadly, most people can't help bullying. I once saw a bumper sticker that quoted,"Everyone is fighting a battle." This quote is very true. If someone is bullying to you, chances are something is happening at their house that you don't know about. Either they are being abused, physically or verbally, or their parents are getting a divorce, or many other possibilities. A few years ago, I was friends with a girl who turned out to be a bully. When I went to her house, one of her pets died. Her father screamed and yelled at her, and said a handful of extremely gruesome curse words. He blamed everything on her, and he said it was her fault that it died. I am ashamed to say that I learned more than one new word that day. This is a strong example of verbal bullying.

On many social networking sites such as Facebook or Formspring, cyberbullying is a big issue. Another way people cyberbully is by sending text messages. People can say much meaner things through technology than they can to your face because they don't have to say it out loud. To them, it's "nicer" to text mean messages or post a mean message on a social networking site. I think it is just as just as mean if not meaner to bully through technology because you don't have the courage to say it to their face.

Sometimes people say that they're joking when they're really just bullying you. Some people think that if you say,"just kidding," it doesn't count. My dad says that if you make fun of someone and then say,"just kidding," it's like stabbing a knife into someone's back then saying,"oops, sorry!" You still feel the pain, and words can't solve that.
