The drops ricocheting off the sidewalk
And racing each other
Out from under the tires of moving cars,
Down the edges of the street,
Through the grates and into the sewer.
It’s pouring outside,
The dirty water flooding the gutter
And rushing out the downspout,
Little ponds all over the city
Splashing up around people’s feet.
They can’t run fast enough.
It was pouring outside
When I loaned you my umbrella,
All that I could think to give,
And now,
Without you here,
I am drenched.
