Small lotus leaves fall
to add to the squash-yellow mask covering the face.
Wooly-worms, left to themselves to crawl the bare wood,
sustain the bitter wind that scatters the leaves,
swirling and scratching the sidewalk,
a queen ready to transform.
A newfound silence, but not quite empty, the cracked wood swings creaking.
Candy apples, silver maples, mint tea,
Soon changing to hot chocolate,
Soon to be huddled under a blanket,
with three layers already on.
But for now, I am one of the few enjoying the goosebumps.
