I remember taking long walks
With you trotting at my side
You could run so fast
With black paws sure to guide.
We’d arrive at the brook
And you’d take a swim
We’d fight over a stick
Then run on a whim.
Up in the fields dotted
With dandelions, so yellow
We’d slow down to a walk
And we felt much more mellow.
The blue cloudy sky
Changed to a pallet of color
And we’d lie on the blanket
And relax next to each other.
Back over the bridge
And into the yard to start
A bright orange fire
And sing songs from the heart.
You’d howl at the moon
And so would I
We’d just stare at the million
Stars in the sky.
Not a care in the world
Our lives had just begun
So happy and thriving
When we were young.
Looks like it’s back to the start
Here we are again
You there, by my side
You’ve still remained my friend.
After all these years
You’re still here with me
I can’t help but cry when
I think of you and your glee.
You can’t see the end coming
But I can very clearly
So moments like this must
Be held onto dearly.
We both had our lives to live
And yours was very good
But I always stop and wonder
If I lived like most people should.
Fast forward again
Your head goes limp in my hand
And take a look at me
I am crying once again.
There goes my best friend
My pal and my accomplice dog
The one fuzzy thing
Happy just chasing a frog.
It’s hard without you here
But your memory is a song well sung
And it’s always in my mind
Just like the times when we were young.
