I leaned over him on the asphalt, my trembling knees drenched
With the blood that seemed to be pooling rapidly around me
Light red—
Thin.
Like it wasn’t quite ready to come out yet.
Unexpected.
The gashes on his soft face contorted him
Into a lifeless monster whose words now spoke of my past
Words of “I love you”
Words telling of happiness
Of running though the beaches on warm summer nights
Throwing eachother into the welcoming water to swim
He lay there in my arms now.
Unexpected.
The car that hit him sped away
A “hit and run”--
The police called it
I can’t leave him
Not now
Unexpected.
The sirens seemed to move in slow motion down the street,
Inching forward as if it were a leisurely Sunday morning
Like carefully sipping hot coffee so to not burn your tongue
Like looking at the pointless comics in the newspaper
Unexpected.
Everything cruel around me flew faster than anything
Like how his blood spread across the street like red ink in water
Diffusing into the air
I couldn’t speak, so I screamed.
That’s all I could do. That was what devastated my heart the most.
He told me he loved me.
I wont ever let that go.
I wont ever run
Unexpected.
They always tell you to be careful
That your life could change in a mere split second
And from that point on
Nothing would be the same
Well I guess we should have listened.
