Beyond the War

The shimmering wood is slowly lowered and the darkness obscures it, as if it is hell,
burning the coffin for a million sins.

The first spoonful of God's Earth is thrown upon it, landing with an awful THWACK!
Reminding the onlookers of all the pain in the past, and all the pain yet to come.

The body stays covered, because who would want to see the tears and scars war has left upon it? Who would want to see the bullet wound that sent merely one more body into the underground pit of the slaughtered, the butchered, the slayed?

No amount of tears shed will wash away the grief clouding millions of hearts
But no one ever objects, never questions, our ways, and when the matter is brought to the surface and cannot be locked away once more, it is merely, "May they rest in peace,"
But what kind of peace is it, when the loved have died in the most violent of ways, fighting for the most peaceful but difficult thing?
