Object of Beauty

Before dawn,
I decided to leave you.
(It’s too much trouble for too little reward--)
And I sank under the forests
Of my heart, and agreed
That you were weighing me down,
Like a wave erodes stones to pebbles.
And in that moment,
I wrestled with you in the dark,
Moving like mountains
Below the earth.
You dropped out of me, sinking
Like all heavy metals,
And did not resurface.

But sunrise brings more dreams
Than night, and the routine of life
Breaks me again.
I float around in the dream
That is the human heart,
(where pain is an object of beauty)
and there I find you
and me, as always,
unawakening.

I was fixated on what it meant to dream, to be conscious yet unconscious. This poem evolved out of an image from such a dream.
