A Shoe in the Road

I found a shoe
Sitting in the road
It was just a simple shoe
Nothing special
But this shoe
It could have been anywhere
Belonged to anyone
Of any gender, any race, any age
It could have been a working shoe
Or one for dancing with one’s love
A shoe that could have walked the world
And no one would know
Could have seen the chapels of Italy
And the peaks of India
It could have climbed trees
And trampled through snow
It could have crunched the autumn leaves
And burnt in the afternoon sun
This shoe could have made one fall
And feel the bitter pain of earth
This shoe could have meant
So much to someone
So little to someone else
This shoe could have been treasure
Or someone’s gift
This shoe could simply be anyone’s
Doing anything
And yet it was just a shoe
I found
Sitting in the road
Discarded
Or maybe just placed there
It was just a shoe
And why was it so special, you ask
Well, this shoe, it was the most interesting thing
Because it was just a shoe
Sitting in the road
Belonging to anyone
Going anywhere.
