I stand upon a rooftop
And look across the world
The chimneys have all gone away
The flags have come unfurled
I stand upon a rooftop
And gaze into the sky
With the smoke and tears and ozone
No starlight meets my eyes
I stand upon a rooftop
And stare down at my feet
My holey shoes and worn out soles
I feel ashamed to bleed
I stand upon a rooftop
And scream and tear my lungs
But though the sound expands
It's as if I'd never sung
I stand upon a rooftop
And cry and cry and cry
But no arms reach or even move
No one sees to ask me why
I stand upon a rooftop
And speak words from my soul
Which are then silenced so as not
To touch a world gone cold
I lie upon a rooftop
And breathe my very last
There's no more air or sunlight
So I'll close my eyes and rest
And look across the world
The chimneys have all gone away
The flags have come unfurled
I stand upon a rooftop
And gaze into the sky
With the smoke and tears and ozone
No starlight meets my eyes
I stand upon a rooftop
And stare down at my feet
My holey shoes and worn out soles
I feel ashamed to bleed
I stand upon a rooftop
And scream and tear my lungs
But though the sound expands
It's as if I'd never sung
I stand upon a rooftop
And cry and cry and cry
But no arms reach or even move
No one sees to ask me why
I stand upon a rooftop
And speak words from my soul
Which are then silenced so as not
To touch a world gone cold
I lie upon a rooftop
And breathe my very last
There's no more air or sunlight
So I'll close my eyes and rest
