Ruth (Goodbye)

My robes weigh heavy today.
Their blue, like deep water,
is wet with ten thousand tears.
Today, my lips hold no tilt of a smile,
in my eyes, only sadness.
My feet have grown into the earth-
they do not want to go.
They do not want
to leave the warmth
of your eyes,
of our bed.
Mother of my husband,
sister-woman,
my love,
how can I leave you now
when all I have has already been
lost?

That is an interesting theory, but they were not lesbians. The book of Ruth in the bible clearly explains that they were daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. Then Naomi helped Ruth marry Boaz, which she did. She still kept close in touch with Naomi and learned the true word of God.

As I'm not a biblical scholar I can't say if this theory is founded or not. I simply enjoy the story the theory suggests. But I understand that it will not be looked on favorably by all. Thank you for your comment though! Was there anything about the poem itself you noticed? Was it too long? Too short? Was there anything you noticed as far as form or craft, redardless of content?

I really think you should read the bible book of Ruth because it isn't very long, it's inspiring, and yes it did have a lot about their relationship and how Noami helped Ruth find a new husband. I'm not a bible scholar either, but I still enjoyed it. About the longness or shortness of a poem, I am the type of person where it doesn't really matter. I think however long or short it takes to explain the true feelings of something. I am also the type of person that believes a poem shouldn't have a t... (more »)
