In this life we live is one thousand
Layered on top of one another
Like the blanket I hold near my skin on frigid nights
Some we live on the ground,
Looking up at the pacing feet of grown ups
Rushing along to do their adult business
That I just know is important
And you want to rush along with them.
Others we spend at our grandma’s house
Not doing much at all
But that is okay, because you are in good company
And some we spend with arrows in our hearts
With no time passing at all
Struggling to get a firm grip on the ground beneath you
And in these moments we cannot imagine feeling any other way
But years tug on your mind
And pummel it with storms
And soon our pasts become strangers

Yet on some days
Your lives may collide on your present
And when you stumble out of bed
And in that fragile state between dreams and reality
You may find yourself looking up,
Or waiting for your grandma to call you downstairs.
Because time
Although it may try
Cannot kill the ghosts of your lives
That occupy your heart
