Books fill up my room.
Not baseball cards,
or pictures of girls,
or basketballs.
Maybe a blown up picture of …
… Pam Anderson might help.

Black-framed glasses
and a white,
pale,
lanky
body.
I should start working out.

At least I can read.
I read four books a day last summer.
The librarian,
80-year-old Mrs. Woodsworth,
she knows my middle name.
If only I had a real friend.
I am sick of seeing her old,
bony,
pale body.
Although it resembles mine.

The kids at school laugh.
Is it the way I dress?
Lacoste,
Ralph Lauren,
La Tigre.
I’ve tried every designer out there.
Staying in the house really saves me money.
My stupid rich parents give me $50 a week for lunch.
$50 times 36 weeks …
what is that?
$1,000,
$2,000,
$10,000?
I should probably know.
Straight A’s 12 years in a row
and counting.

With all of this,
or none of this –
it depends how you look at it –
all I need is a friend.

This is seriously good! It reminds me so much of my friends who are considered the "emo kids" and depressed and such when no one even tries to get to know us. If they did they would realize that none of those are true. Yes we all have our days but we don't cut ourselves like they say. Sorry, I'll stop ranting now... Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that this is really good and that I can relate to it, especially the reading part. I read like some people watch tv, obsessively and for hours on end.

I know the feeling. I'm the pale quiet girl in the corner with the glasses and her nose in a book. When I try and speak up, someone else begins speaking like I don't even exist. No one seems to notice me. Twice I've been counted absent even though I was sitting right there.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Don't be shy. I was shy in my freshman year and felt I had no friends and I read a few books on how to more effectively communicate and I have a ton of friends its all about being nice to people and speaking up. Sadly it is very rare people will speak to you first so its up to us smart kids to initiate the conversation.
