When the Cards Were Dealt

When the cards were dealt,
I drowned in my tears,
And my life became my worst fears.

When the cards were dealt,
My world was a nightmare;
It was life that I could not bear.

When the card were dealt,
I have to bleed,
Every time I eat.

When the cards were dealt,
My confidence was shattered,
And I forgot about what truly mattered.

When the cards were dealt,
I often forgot how to breathe,
I also had to make my heart beat.

When the cards were dealt,
My eyes always shone pain,
Life was no longer a game.

When the cards were dealt,
I forgot my life plan.
And had to try to understand.

When the cards were dealt,
My existence reversed,
I couldn’t help but feel cursed.

When the cards were dealt,
Part of me died,
And still hasn’t come back to life.

The author's comments:
This poem describes the pain I felt when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age nine in 2005. Most of my poetry revolves around my diabetes, and the daily trouble that comes with it. But this poem in particular describes the feelings I felt for the first few months after I was diagnosed.

This is very deep for a young girl, but you've had to face some grown up issues in dealing with your illness. Remember, wisdom is born from experience. Keep writing what you know and you'll always hae an audience.
