confessions of a shopaholic by sophie kinsella

Confessions of a Shopaholic – Book review

How do you feel when you see that perfect pair of sandals or a stunning floral skirt? All my life I have been the biggest shopaholic, splurging on everything I see. When I first laid eyes on the book Confessions of a Shopaholic, I already knew that I could relate to the author, Sophie Kinsella and her characters. This book is realistic fiction, I usually only read fantasy so I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it. The lexile of this book is around 700 so it’s not too difficult and it’s not too easy. This book was published by the Bantam dell publishing company in February 2001.
In the beginning of the book, the main character, Rebecca Bloomwood is introduced. She lives in flat with her roommate Sue. Rebecca receives a bill regarding her financial situation; she owes the bank approximately $6,000. Throughout the book, Rebecca is always being taunted by her debt. She hopes that she will win the lottery and receive ten grand. This book is very Ironic because Rebecca is a shopaholic; the catch is that she works for a writing company that helps people with their finances.
One of my favorite parts was when Rebecca was about to get a very expensive scarf, it was on sale and she was just about to pay for it when she realizes that she left her credit card at work. She doesn’t have to time to go back to get it because she is already late for a press conference. Her only choice is to put the scarf on hold, attend the conference and then race back to the store and purchase it. During the conference, Rebecca receives a call from her boss. He asks for a favor which leaves no time for Rebecca to grab her credit card. The scarf is around $120, she has $100 in her purse but she needs $20 more. Rebecca asks her friend for a loan but she is all out. Unfortunately, Rebecca states her need of money rather loudly. Across the room Luke Brandon the manager of the conference hears her and says, “Why do you need $20?” Impulsively she says, “My aunt is in the hospital and I want to get her a present!” At the end of the conference, Luke Brandon walks by, pulls out a crisp $20 bill and hands it to Rebecca.
Confessions of a Shopaholic had very interesting characters like Sue, Rebecca, Claire, Luke Brandon Alicia and Elly. The book is written in Rebecca’s point of view or in 1rst point of view. Here’s how Rebecca describes Elly, “Every time I see her, she’s got new lipstick on and she always wears really interesting clothes, like today she’s wearing an orange chiffony shirt over a pair of white cotton trousers and a big wooden necklace!” (Page 19, Kinsella).
In general, I rate this book a ten because I really liked how it was so relatable, I also think that readers will enjoy listening to the different adventures that Rebecca has.
