The main theme of the book is determination and patience. I believe that the authors purpose is to inform the reader about how things worked back when there were segregation laws. The intended audience is adults, but I, being a teenager, absolutely loved it! It is by far my favorite book!

The author of the book had actually lived back in the time of the setting. This means that much of the information in the book is actually true. The main characters, Minnie and Abilene, are what make the book amazing. The two African American women worked for white families. Their jobs were to care for the children, cook food, and clean the house, but as Ms. Hilly, Minnie’s boss moves to a retirement home, Minnie is stuck. The two women help each other out which is a large part of the book.

Although the book is very good there are some faults in it. I thought that the book was hard to read. This is because the text is written in first person. With the women not formally taught how to read and write, sentences such as,”…Lawd, how hard wa thad!” are very hard to understand.

My theory is very correct. It was a good book, but hard to understand. If you sound out the words it helps a lot.

I believe that you should read this book. It is an amazingly written book. Kathryn Stockett did an outstanding job. You feel as though you would possibly be in the story. So in conclusion, I would advise you to read this book!
