Artists in the modern world of music are striving to boost creativity and provide new experiences for their listeners. Tyler, the Creator accomplished this with his sixth studio album, "IGOR." This musical marvel displays a unique blend of styles and genres to depict a binding love story for its audience. Tyler hides much of his genius in plain sight, as most only view the surface of the album but lack the knowledge, energy, or passion to go deeper and unravel the true meanings behind the chaotic beats and cryptic lyrics.

“IGOR” is structured in a chronological order that follows that of a romantic story experienced through the perspective of Igor, an alter ego of Tyler, the Creator, who reveals a vulnerability and depth previously unseen in him. Igor is a character who is put through a full range of emotions, experiencing anger, hate, love, jealousy, desperation, obsession, and revenge to their extremes. Tyler turns into Igor due to these strong negative emotions; therefore, Igor is not considered a good side of Tyler. One of the telling points is the name of his alter ego, traditionally associated with disdained characters in stories. His lover does not share the same feelings for him but rather for another woman that Igor grows to despise. He descends into an unstable state of mind because of the harsh emotions this situation creates.

Igor did the worst thing he could do in his relationship and projected onto his lover via his jealousy and insecurities. The chaotic and irrational switch between his emotions is that of a madman, which is a concept hinted at the beginning of the album and then clearly shown with the track “NEW MAGIC WAND” where Igor threatens to murder the girl that comes between him and his lover. The new magic wand refers to a gun he bought that would “magically” fix his problems. The disorder in his mind is woven into the instrumentals, lyrics, and non-linear progression of the songs and album, which leaves the listener more confused than Igor in his story.

The loop created by the starting and closing notes of the album—E flat and B flat, respectively—is a fascinating detail of the record that many do not pick up on. It represents Tyler's experiences, revealing a pattern in which he fails to learn from his past mistakes and grief. The loop starts with the closing song, "ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?" since his emotions soften here, hinting at a wish to reconnect with his partner despite the damage he had gone through before. This detail shows that Tyler's romantic experiences have a circular nature and repeat a cycle of attraction, heartbreak, and a persistent return to the same negative state. It adds another layer to Igor and shows how truly enslaved he is to his emotions and other people, an undoubtedly negative side of his character.

This album is a true testament to artistic expression and utter bravery, as Tyler pushed through the doubt, the criticism, and the fear of possible failure to produce this masterpiece. It defies easy categorization, seamlessly combining genres like R&B, funk, and neo-soul, and challenges the boundaries of hip-hop. The intentional blurring of genre lines and non-linear progression serve a purpose, reflecting the complexity of the emotions explored throughout the narrative. In his previous projects, Tyler stuck to the rap genre and an aggressive style of beats and themes. This album, however, was distinct in its variety of genres and experimental, unpolished feel that resonated with his fans as authentic to Tyler's feelings.

Deviating into new genres and boldly departing from your previous image as an artist always opens the way for criticism and fear of failure on behalf of the artist. Tyler could have stuck to an established formula of producing another successful rap album, but he chose to value his passion for music and artistic expression rather than the money he would have buried this project under. His bravery eventually paid off as it earned him a Grammy Award, landed eight songs on the Billboard Hot 100, and put his album first place on the Billboard 200 chart.

To sum up everything stated so far, “IGOR” is an album that talks about the story of Igor and hides rich metaphors and meaningful lyrics behind those infamous chaotic melodies. Despite initially receiving minimal support, the album amassed remarkable success, thereby enhancing the value of Tyler's accomplishments. He drove us mad with his uniqueness and creative production by presenting us with this infamous work of art.
