The Assassin And The Child
Sole is a very well-known assassin for killing his targets quickly and quietly. One day he goes to an alley and kills his target along with three witnesses, and he towers over them before their deaths. Sole wraps trash bags around the bodies and puts them in the dumpster. As he exits the alley, he notices something on his leg, and it's a small girl that has clung to him. He stares into the girl's eyes for a moment. Then, with a burst, a door opens from the nearby orphanage with a lady looking for a small girl with worry in her eyes. Sole’s cloak drops and it covers the girl. The lady approaches him and asks, “Have you seen a girl about four feet tall and looks like she’s eight years old with brown hair and eyes?”
Sole answers with, “I think so” as he lifts his cloak, and he remembers all of his blades in his clothing and drops his cloak down and quickly says, “Oh wait.. she had blond hair. Sorry for the mix up.”
The woman continues to look for the child, and Sole briskly walks to a different alleyway than the one with bodies in it. The child lets go of his leg and tries to stay under his cloak as he walks.
He takes the girl out from under his cloak and says, “What do they want from a brat like you, and why are you trying to hide from them in my cloak?”
The girl just looks terrified and doesn’t respond.
“Sorry, I guess I was too harsh, so let's try this again. I’m Sole, and you are?”
The girl squeaks out, “L-L-Lana”.
Sole speaks again. “Hi, Lana. Now, why are you hiding from those people?”
Lana looks around before whispering. “They are cruel and harsh, and they make us do everything for them.”
“Can you tell me how they are cruel or harsh?”
The two hear footsteps. Lana hides under Sole’s cloak and holds onto his leg again.
The man Sole recognize and gives me a pouch of gold and the man says, “Good work. Now, I have another job for you.”
Sole takes the pouch of gold and looks down into his eyes and says, “What job, killing another noble or a competitor.”
A smile cracks at the man’s lips. “No, I just recently lost a kid, and I need them back by tomorrow afternoon. Would you like the job?”
Sole stares directly into his eyes and says, “I don’t find lost things, so, if you don’t have work for me, just don’t bother me. Do you understand old man?”
As Sole begins to walk away the man shouts. “What if I pay triple the price for finding this brat?”
Sole stops in his tracks then turns his head and says, “Like I said earlier, I don’t find lost things, so go ask your mother since you clearly can’t find it.”
Sole continues to hide the child under his cloak until dusk then he heads home. When he heads inside, he starts to make himself dinner, and Lana comes out from his cloak. She wonders what Sole is doing, and Sole is shocked that the child was still following him. He takes a step back and lets go of the handle on the pan so he can give her some room, while Lana just looks at the food, and she starts drooling out of her mouth.
Lana says, “Ohhh, is this a burger? It smells so yummy.”
Sole sighs then says, “It’s not a burger patty; it’s a steak.” Lana looks at the steak with amazement.
Lana tries to grab the steak off the pan, but Sole stops her then he says, “Don’t touch it! It’s still hot and cooking.” Sole flicks her on her forehead.
“What was that for? Meanie.”
Sole looks down at his feet and sighs while covering his eyes then says, “Because you’re going to get yourself hurt if you touch it. That's also a taste of what pain this pan can cause you on a small level.” Lana looks at Sole with a pouty face and turns her head away.
Sole whispers under his breath, “Geez, this is why I hate kids.”
Sole continues cooking dinner as Lana watches. The house fills with the aroma of the steak ,and Lana drools. Sole finishes making the dinner, then remembers the child he has with him, so he decides to split the meal in half. Sole gives Lana half of the steak and sets her at the table then himself. Lana scarfs down the meal within minutes. As Sole watches Lana devour her meal he starts to catch feelings for her.
Sole says, “It won’t run away.” Lana finishes her food, and she runs to Sole and shows him her clean plate.
“Is there more?”
“No, there's not, but maybe tomorrow I’ll cook you a full meal”
Lana beams with excitement, and she can’t contain her energy. She bounces off the walls while running around. Sole finished his dinner, and he washes the dishes. As Sole washes the dishes he looks out the window and sees a massive number of dark clouds.
“Looks like a storm’s coming to us tonight,” he whispers under his breath. As he prepares for bed, he hears the rain outside pouring down. Thunder sounds with lightning striking the ground. Several minutes later, Sole leaves.
Sole had a job to do that night, so he left, but before he leaves he wishes her a good night. When he leaves, a rival of his enters his home. Lana sees the man and runs into Sole’s room and hides under the covers. The man takes out multiple knives and starts to plunge the blades into the covers. When the blades get pulled out they are covered in a crimson blood. The man walks away and leaves Sole’s home.
Sole arrives back home late in the night and begins cleaning the equipment he used. He looks for Lana and finds her in his bed and his blankets are stained red with her blood. He checks Lana’s pulse and she doesn’t have a pulse. As Sole finds a knife in Lana’s body that's responsible for stabbing her and slitting her throat. The knife has a note on it that has an address on it. Sole goes to the address, and it's a inn and he kills everyone there. As he looks around for any evidence about who killed Lana. After his tiny rampage, Sole notices that he killed innocent people, and business partners. He falls to the ground wanting to know what to do next. The inn’s doors burst open with multiple knights and royal guards that circle Sole. Sole slowly rises up, and his eyes glaze over with rage. He kills all of the knights and guards with precision and expertise. As Sole kills the last guard he feels cold steel enter the back of his neck and a whisper.
“I thought they would take you in, but I guess I had to deal with you myself, Sole,” said the voice. Sole’s body falls to the ground and his life slowly leaves his body as he closes his eyes. Sole no longer moves or breaths and he spends his afterlife in a dark abyss.
