The Mountain of XXX

I’m in the snowcapped mountains of xxx. My armor is getting heavy and I’m chilled to the bone, my horse had fallen I don’t know how far back. I have been walking for days, months even. Suddenly I hear a howl in the distance and I know it means trouble. Their thundering footsteps get closer. I draw my sword facing the wolf like creatures that are as tall as any man and black as night. There are three total, I stand at my ready keeping a sharp eye on each one of them. One pounces, I’m cold but still sharp. I side-step and drive my sword into its chest. I feel the life drain from its body and the warm blood drip down my sword and onto my arm. I dislodge my sword and turn to see the other creature on top of me. It sinks its teeth into my arm. Screaming in pain I hack it in the side with my sword leaving a giant gash. The creature yelps and frees my arm. I get to my feet and see the two creatures circling me. The one that I gashed has a limp. It pounces I raise my shield to block its attack. It hits me with enough force to dislocate my shoulder. Its on the ground alive but not moving I drive my sword through its neck. I pop my shoulder back in place and notice the last one starting to run. I need the food so I pull out my bow. A well placed arrow in the back of its neck stops it dead in its tracks.
I’ll need to start a fire to preserve this meat. I gather fir needles and look for the right stones. I dig a hole in the snow and throw the fir needles and some twigs in the hole. I strike the two stones together and create a large amount of sparks. I continue to do this until the tender catches fire. Soon I have a roaring fire that emits warmth and seems to be alive. I drag the creatures over to the fire. To get to the meat I have to skin it I drive my knife into its gut and pull up to its chest, its still warm blood flows out of its belly along with all its intestines. I use its pelt to create gloves. I do the same with the other creatures their blood pooling in a cavity in the snow. The second pelt I use to make a sack to carry stuff, and the third to make a coat, as soon as I put it on the thick fur immediately warms me. I hang the meat just over the flames. I curl up next to the warm fire and fall asleep.
When I wake up the sun is just above the horizon and my wolf meat has become jerky. I put everything in my pack and start walking. I find a path and see a sign I follow it to the nearest city by the name of Marthal.
I walk for days when the massive walls of the city. I approach the main gate. “Halt!” yelled the guard. “The city is closed with the dragon about.” Dragon I thought “Please I need food and shelter.” I pleaded. There was a long silence. “Fine, but you look the adventurous type, go talk to the king he might have a job for you.” The guard turned and opened the gate. “Thank you” I said. As I stepped through the gate I felt the warmth and the smells of baking bread and cooking meat, a smell I haven’t smelt in a long time. I made my way to the nearest stall and asked for a slice of steak. “That will be five pieces.” The merchant said. I was confused and it must have shown because he spoke again. “Five gold pieces sir. Do you have any gold?” “Umm no I don’t.” I replied. “Here tell you what, you give this letter to Heather in the Northern District and the steak is free.” He handed me a folded piece of parchment. “Ok I’ll do it who do I tell her it’s from?” “Just tell her it’s from a friend,” he said.
I set off in the direction of the Northern District which I figured was to the north. I was right I asked around for the woman named Heather. I eventually found myself on her door step. “Oh thank you,” she said, “I’ve been meaning to go see Garn.” “Your welcomes miss.” I replied. I made my way back to the stall stomach growling. “Thank you sir,” Said Garn “and here is your steak.”
I found the general store and walked in. “Hello sir.” Said the man behind the counter “I have anything you need and I’ll buy almost anything from you.” “Hello.” I said as I walked toward the man. I opened my pack and grabbed my extra wolf pelt and showed it to him. “Oh my,” He said, “This is an Anjuar pelt, they are very ferocious, where did you get this?” “I killed it and two others.” I said. “Oh my, this is a very expensive piece. What do you want for it?” The man said. “Ummm I’ll take your best and insulated suit of armor and your sharpest sword.” I said. He went in the back and came back with an arm full of metal and fur he then grabbed a sword off the wall. “Here this is my finest suit and my sharpest sword would you like to put it on?” “Sure.” I replied. “Alright,” the shopkeeper said, “You can change right in there.” He pointed to a small room that looked to be his bedroom. I walked into it and closed the door. As I took my old armor off I could see all my battle scars and where my armor had rubbed my skin dry. When I put on the new suit it felt amazing the soft fur against my skin and no bare metal on my skin. I walked out of the room and placed my old suit of armor in the desk. “What do you want for this.” I gestured toward the pile of metal and leather on the table. “I’ll give you 250 gold pieces for it.” Said the shopkeeper plopping a bag of coins on the table. I took the sack and grabbed my new sword and headed toward the door.
I looked at the nearest sign and headed toward the Royal District where I figured the king would be. I walked up at least a Hundred steps and saw a giant castle. I approached the doors and went in. The door opened into a large gathering hall with a long table down the middle at the table was a giant throne. A man sat in the throne, He must be the king I thought. I approached and said that a guard said he might have a job for me. “Oh yes,” said the king in a loud booming voice, “he must have been talking about our dragon problem.” “Dragon problem?” I asked questioningly. “Yes a dragon lives atop the mountain to the south, he will terrorize and burn down local farms. I need you to go kill it.” The king said. “What will be my reward?” I asked. “A house in the city, a place to be for however long you like, and a fair amount of gold.” The king said with a wink. “Ok I’ll accept your mission, I’ll be on my way as soon as possible.” “Thank you traveler.” Said the king.
I went back to the meat stall in the town center and bought five steaks for the journey, then went to the apothecary and bought potions and warm beverages. I was on my way I headed for the main gate and was stopped by a strange man. “Are you going to kill the dragon atop the mountain?” the man said. “Why yes I am sir why do you ask?” “That dragon destroyed my farm, please take this.” The man handed me a strange assortment of metal. “If you strike these two pieces of metal together it will create a very large amount of sparks.” “Thank you kind sir.”
I headed up the mountain in search of the dragon. I found a large pile of bones and knew I must be getting close. I heard a thunderous roar and looked up, there it was black as night. It landed in front of me shaking the ground. It roared again this time even louder, it picked up its giant foot and brought it down right where I was standing, I side stepped and chopped off its toe. It roared in pain and tried to grab me with its mouth full of teeth. It thrust my sword down its throat as deep as I could it collapsed next to me blood seeping from its mouth. I chopped just below its head and its head rolled off its body. I picked up the head and went back down the mountain.
When I stepped through the front gates of the town I was showered with joy and gifts. I worked my way through the crowd to the kings palace. When I stepped through the palace doors the kings laughter was heard throughout the palace. I approached him with the dragon head in hand. “I cant belive you did it son!” the king exclaimed. “This is amazing! It calls for celebration!” “Thank you sir but, I’ll take my reward and be on my way.” I said. “But where will you go?” the king asked. “I’m just not ready to settle down yet.” “Well ok.” The king said. “Here’s your reward?” he said throwing a large bag of gold my way. “Thank you sir.” I said. I then left the village and went down the path in search of the next village in need of aid.
