Room 143
Mr. Rogers was going to a few schools for an interview to become a teacher, but they would say no or say they would say “We will call you later”, but never will. One day he went to an interview and as he was waiting, he saw a kid sitting near the office. Mr. Rogers went to the kid and asked “What's your name”, The kid replied, “ My name is Jamie.” Mr. Rogers asked him why he was going to the office, and the boy answered “ My teacher said I can’t remember anything, so she sent me to the office.” Mr. Rogers felt unhappy for the boy so he came up with an idea. “Oh I forgot my name, silly Billy me, do you remember my name?” asked Mr.Rogers. The boy laughed and answered, “Your name is Mr. Rogers.” Mr. Rogers told him “You see you do Remember.” Mr.Rogers was then called to the office for an interview. As he walked over to the office, he knew he had to get this job because of what he witnessed, he knew the kids needed him. In the interview, Principal Mike asked him “Mr. Rogers, you're a good man, Why do you want to teach these kids?” Mr. Rogers replied, “Because these kids need to know someone loves them and cares for them, they need to have a classroom where they can feel safe and escape from their troubles.” Principal Mike was pleased with Mr. Rogers's response and told him “Mr. Rogers you're hired, you will have classroom 143.”
Mr. Rogers enters the classroom and organizes everything for his students. When the bell rings he is filled with excitement to see his students, but they come in ignoring him and misbehaving. Mr.Rogers didn’t think of it because it was the first day the kids saw their friends. When the students sat down that is when he introduced himself. “Hey kiddos my name is Mr. Rogers and I will be your U.S. History teacher” and he starts telling them about his hobbies, the places he traveled to, and much more. He starts to build a relationship with his students, but they ignore him and even try to make him quit, Mr. Rogers didn’t want to leave because he saw greatness and leaders in them, it's just they haven’t seen it in themselves yet. Days later Mr. Rogers decorated his classroom by painting the walls, putting up posters, LED lights, and much more to the point the classroom felt like you were in a different world, but Principle Mike didn’t like the way the classroom was set up, so he warned Mr.Rogers to not do this kind of act quoting “ This is my school not yours, know your place”.
Christmas is here and there is a classroom party. Mr. Rogers set up a Christmas tree for his students to decorate and he also had hot cocoa, marshmallows, and food that he ordered for his kids. Everything was perfect, but he forgot something more important. MOVIES! So he ran to the nearest store to get some movies, but he heard a sound in an alley, a child’s cry. Mr. Rogers started to creep a little closer to see who it was and it was one of his students. He saw his students covered with bruises and blood, he picked him up in his arms and asked him “What happened kiddo?” The boy responded, “My dad was drunk and I saw him beating up my mom, so I got in front of my mom to protect her, but he got mad and started beating me up.” The boy then told Mr.Rogers these words that he will never forget “Mr.Rogers I’m scared”. Mr.Rogers hugged him tight and said “I’m right here kiddo, I’m not gonna let anyone hurt you” Mr.Rogers picked him up and took him to the nearest hospital to have a check-up. MrRogers was waiting when he saw the boy's father, Mr. Rogers was filled with anger and went up to the father and said “You ever hit him again, don’t be surprised I’ll show up to your work and give you the same marks you gave to your son, you're a coward for beating up a child.”. After the check he took the boy with him and said “ You want to pick out some movies for the class?” the boy replied “Yes please”. The boy chose the movies and went back to school and had fun with the class like nothing ever happened.
Mr. Rogers tried one last time to build a relationship with his students and it was a success, his students would love coming to school because he made learning fun and because he made them feel safe. He witnessed his students go from misbehaving and having people tell them they were nothing to seeing them be leaders and having the teacher compliment them. Principal Mike sees this and he starts to have hope for room 143.
It's a state exam and Mr.Rogers and his students worked very hard for this, Principle Mike then tells them “OK boys and girls this is the State Exam, You will be silent and if you need pencils raise your hand.” The moment Principle Mike said “Began testing” the students flipped their pages and started testing. It has been 8 hours and the students finished testing. When the test scores came Mr. Rogers held a class party because all of his students passed the test and had the highest score, their score was higher than the A.P students. Mr.Rogers and his students not only surprised the parents but also the whole school. If there was one thing Mr.Rogers did was that he always told his students he loved them and that they mattered to him. Mr. Rogers never gave up on them when everyone else did.
