Simply Happy
The sun peaks through those light orange leaves as they blow swiftly from side to side. The wind pushes through the trees sending a little shiver down my spine as it reaches me on just another beautiful, fall day. My dysfunctional family gathered together attempting to capture just one decent picture. Each of our parents standing next to the photographer creating foolish faces in an endive to shape a smile across my younger cousin’s face, my grandpa making silly comments to help those already forced smiles grow a little larger. Each toothy grin staring at the lady with the camera, almost speaking to her, saying, “hurry and finish the pictures already.” As the wind died down, the leaves stopped blowing across our feet and our hair all fell back in place. In that split second we heard a click of the camera and the flash, temporarily blinding, causing all of us burst into laughter. The breeze brushes against my face and that cool crisp scent of fall fills my nose. That smell, only around once a year, reminds you of those memories from your childhood. For a second I feel like a movie is playing back in my head, little snippets of my childhood flying by: Halloween, carving pumpkins, and playing in the leaves; all some of the best parts of fall. Soon that familiar smell left and I glance around at how happy everyone is. Now my mind returns me to just a few weeks before when my family was outside one night. The sweet sound of laughter echoing through my ears as my cousin joked about times of the past. My eyes wander over to my brother, leaping behind two of them just playing games and having fun. It amazes me how something so simple can bring so much happiness to our lives. Soon I focus back to those familiar smiles and faces and instantly feel the sides of my lips start to pull up and my teeth become exposed. As that smile fills my face I feel strong, my father’s firm hands grab my side, a loud scream leaves my mouth as I’m lifted into the air and descend back to the ground just as fast as I arose. This time falling into a huge pile of leaves, so delicate I felt them crackling and breaking beneath me. Now almost consuming me, my face burrowed so far down that the musty scent of dirt filled my lungs as I breathed in. I then boost my body back to the surface and hear the giggling of my family as they inspect my ratty hair, leaves and sticks intertwined throughout. I laugh and start brushing them out as we return to our attempt at a normal family picture. At this moment I realize how lucky I am to have such a great family to enjoy my life with.
