“So, you really don’t believe in love, Betty?”
“No, I don’t. I’ve never believed in such thing as love.”
“Why not? What if someone who’s a friend takes an interest in you?”
“Well, then sucks to be them, because I don’t like anyone.”
“You haven’t liked anybody ever at all?”
“No, why would I? There’s no point in falling in love with anybody. People just waste so much of their time falling in love with others only to get their heart broken, or cheated on. I just don’t see it, Oliver.”
“Or maybe just maybe, Betty, you’ve never tried falling in love with someone, that’s why you don’t even know the feeling.”
“Well, I never want to experience that. I just don’t believe in it, and I don’t think I ever will.”
“Well you will.”
“How?”
“You will see. Hey, how about we watch a movie together at your house or something?”
“All right, sure, I guess. I don’t mind, let’s go now.”
“So, what movie do you want to end up seeing then?”
“Let’s watch the notebook, Betty. Maybe you will change your mind about love.”
“Ugh! Do we really have to watch that movie? Why not a comedy movie or something?”
“Because Betty, corny romantic movies are cute. Why not?”
“Ugh! Do we really have to Oliver?”
“Yes, especially for me, Betty, if you love me.”
“I don’t love anybody.”
“Cute, but you love me, so let’s watch it.” “What do you think of it so far?”
“I mean it’s, whatever, I can’t believe Noah actually took the time to chase after her, even when she was about to marry someone else. I can never do that, honestly.”
“See, because you’ve never tried, Betty, that’s why you don’t even know how that feels.”
“Because, Oliver, it’s dumb. People just waste their time and money on a person, especially people who could just be taking advantage of you and don’t even bother loving you at all. I would never put myself out there, honestly.”
“You’re so in denial; do you think you’re ever going to get married one day?”
“No, because I will never fall in love with anybody.”
“Wow, Betty, you seriously don’t know what you’re missing.”
“Oh yeah? Then what am I missing, Oliver. Tell me?”
“You’re missing out on great guys who are into you even if you don’t believe in love.”
“Oh really? Like who?”
“Well, there is this one guy I know, he is a hopeless romantic guy who is into you like crazy and he knows exactly how you are, yet you don’t believe in love.”
“Is it one of our friends? Who is it?”
“Well, he believes one day you will fall in love, and he will show you more than anybody else that he was right.”
“Can you at least tell me who it is, Oliver?! “
“You really want to know?”

“Yes! Now tell me please.”
“Okay, fine. It’s me, Betty. I’m the one who’s really into you. I see so much more between us and I just can’t stop thinking about you. There’s just something about you that makes you so different, and I hope you can really see how I feel.”
“I’m in complete shock right now.” Looking at Oliver with wide eyes she kisses him out of nowhere.
“Betty, you just kissed me! What?”
“I’m into you, too but I only want to be friends who have fun, okay?”
“All right, that’s totally fine with me. It won’t be anything more.”
“Okay, well, because you’re my friend, and I wouldn’t want to lose you as one of my close friends.”
“Yeah, I totally understand. We will keep it just like that, then.”
“Okay, so what do we do now?”
“Well, we could keep watching this sappy movie or go to your room and pick up where we left off. What do you think, Oliver?”
“I pick the second one.”
They go lie down on the bed.
“Man, I never thought we would be doing this right now.”
“Honestly, me neither. I don’t like anybody right now, really, besides you.”
“Well you spoke up and things can always change Oliver.”Betty kisses Oliver again passionately.
. . .
“Oh, man, it’s already 9:00 am.”
Betty’s phone lights up and Oliver goes to check it. It’s from a guy named Austin and read’s the text, “Hey, babe. Good morning. Want to go out for some breakfast?”
Oliver, upset, wakes Betty up. “Hey, good morning sunshine.”
Betty reaches over to kiss him, but he doesn’t let her.
“Sorry, Morning breath. Hey, I have to go back to my apartment, so I’ll talk to you later, okay.”
“Oh, but you don’t want to go for any coffee or breakfast?”
“No, its fine. I’ll talk to you later, honestly. Have to go. Bye.”Oliver talking to himself: “I can’t believe she’s doing this to me. She says she doesn’t believe in love and doesn’t talk to any guys, when she is talking to this Austin guy? Who does she think she is? I thought we had something, at least. Man, there’s nothing pretty about her anymore. I’m going to go over later to talk to her about this, because this isn’t fair to me. He dials her number.
“Hey, Betty, do you mind if we go for coffee later?”

“Yeah, sure, Oliver. Let’s go now. I’ll meet you at Star Bucks”
. . .
“So, what have you done today?”
“Well, I have been doing a lot of thinking today, and you?”
“Nothing. Work has been such a drag. I just want to spend time with you and watch those corny movies or lie in bed and kiss and such, don’t you?”
“Honestly, no, not really.”
“Wow! Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.”
“Yeah, I literally did, and it was an unpleasant morning, too.”
“Why was it so unpleasant, then, Oliver?”

“Oh, you really want to know? Well, I couldn’t even concentrate today since this morning a guy named Austin was texting you for breakfast, which I bet after I left you went and did. Did you?”

Betty stays silent and looks down. “Well...,

“Ugh! Don’t even answer that, then, Betty.” Sighs. “I thought we had something, Betty! You even told me how you felt about me last night and I just thought we could at least grow out of this phase that we’re in now.”

“Oliver, what are you even talking about?! I told you there will be nothing more between us than just friends. I thought you clearly understood that yesterday.”

“I do. I just thought there would be more than that eventually”

“Well, no.”
“Ugh! I have to go. I’m upset right now.”
“Oliver, no. I hope we can still be friends.”

Oliver stops, doesn’t even turn back and he keeps walking.
. . .
Betty stops by his apartment, and Oliver opens the door.

“I’m sorry, Oliver. I didn’t mean to be rude. We don’t have to have labels now, or anything, to define what our relationship is.”

“Yeah, but what are we, then, Betty? I see you as more than that.”

“Along the way we will see what happens, okay? But I really am into you, Oliver. Are you still into me?”
“Of course.” smiles at her and kisses her.
. . .
Oliver wakes up without Betty by his side and sees a note: “Oliver, I had to go to work. Sorry. I’ll see you later. XO Betty.”

“God, she makes me so happy. I’m so glad we’re finally on the same page. I don’t think anything could go wrong and stop this.”

Betty comes over. Betty is all down and uninterested. “Hey, Betty, what’s up? How was work?”
“It was boring as always.”

“So, what do you want to do?”
“Honestly, nothing really. I just want to go home and stay there.”

“Why? That’s so boring. Do you want to watch a movie or go out to eat?”
“No, I just want to go home and stay there.”
“Nah, lets go. I’m taking you out to eat”
. . .

“Man, these burgers look good, right?”
“Yeah, I guess so.”

“Man, what’s been up with you today, Betty? Are you okay?”

“Yeah, everything is fine.”

“Then, why are you being so dry with me?”

“I don’t know. I’m just, I’m little out of it today, you know?”

“Yeah, I get what you mean. So, you don’t want to watch a movie or anything after this?”

“No, I just want to go home.”

“Okay, then I guess, well, I will see you tomorrow, then.”

“All right, bye.”

Oliver tries kissing her and she turns her cheek instead of kissing him. To himself: “Man, I wonder what’s wrong with her. She’s been so distant today. I hope she reaches me later or that everything is okay. I hope I didn’t upset her in any way. God, I really am in love with her. Her eyes, how they sparkle, and her cute nose, those lips so smooth and nice, her nice wavy hair, she’s so cute and makes me so happy.” Oliver smiles to himself.
. . .

Oliver is awakened by a phone call from Betty. “Hey, what’s up, betty?”
“Hey, do you think you can come over tonight? I’m having a small get together and I want you to meet my friends and it will be fun.”
“All right, sure. I will totally be there tonight. See you there.” To himself: “Man, I have to look my best for her. I want to wow her and for her to smile when she sees me.”

. . .

Oliver goes to Betty’s apartment and knocks on the door.

“Oliver, you made it!”
“ Course! I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Kisses Betty, but Betty only gives her cheek.

“Come, let’s meet everyone.”

After meeting everyone Oliver goes to the balcony and overhears Betty talking to one of her friends. “Oh, you didn’t hear? I just got engaged to Austin! I know! I’m so happy! Look at the ring he gave me.”
“Oh my gosh, why didn’t she tell me about this?! I think that’s why she was being all like that yesterday. Ugh! Why does she do this to me? I swear.” Oliver starts heading out but Betty and Austin now came in to talk to Oliver.

“Oliver, where are you going? I want you to meet my fiancé, Austin.”

“Oh, I was just going home. I have to wake up early tomorrow, have an early meeting for work, but sorry for having to leave so early.”

“Oh, all right then, but either way, this is Austin. Austin, this is Oliver.”

“Hello there, Oliver. Betty has talked about you and says you guys are close friends.”

“Yeah, we are, indeed.” smiles “Well sorry to end this, but I have to go. it was nice meeting you, though, and Betty, congratulations on your engagement. Have a nice night, you guys. Bye.” To himself: I can’t believe she did this to me. Do you know how in love I was with her? And she just throws me off to the side like that? I’m so done with her. I can’t believe her. I hate her smile, her hair is so messy, her eyes are ugly to look at, her lips are not even kissable, I do not like Betty at all, and she broke my heart.”

. . .
Oliver is outside in the city on a bench, looking out to what’s beneath him: cars, architectural buildings and such. He is gazing out until Betty comes along out of nowhere.

“Hey, Oliver, how have you been?! “

“I’ve been good lately, and you?”
“Good. About to get married, and I’m super excited with Austin and all. I never thought any of this would be happening to me.”

“Yeah, me either”

“Are you still mad about what I did?”

“Of course I am! You left me out to dry, Betty.”

“Actually, you did, Oliver.”
“How did I leave myself to dry?”

“Well, I warned you from the start didn’t I? I told you we would be only friends, and you didn’t understand that. We were only ever friends, Oliver, that’s it.”
“Okay, but still, you didn’t have to leave me like that; I was really into you, Betty, and you went off to marry someone? How did that even happen?!”

“I don’t know, honestly. I just met him and I knew that he was the one. At first I didn’t trust it, but along the way I ended up liking him and look, now were getting married.”

“But, how did things just happen so quickly?”
“I don’t know, it just happened.”

“What happened? That’s what I don’t get.”

“Oliver.”

“What, Betty? Tell me?”

“I woke up one day and I knew.”

“Knew what?”

“I knew I could promise him I'd feel the same way every morning. In a way that I... I never could with you.”

“You know what sucks? When everything you believe in was not even true, real”

“What is?”

“Soul mates, true love, all that nonsense that people believe in. I should have listened to you all along, Betty.”

“Well, I have to go already, Oliver. I’m sorry. He’s waiting for me.” Betty is about to leave and Oliver calls her name.

“Betty!”

She turns back

“I really hope you are truly happy.”

She smiles and leaves, and Oliver stays thinking to himself about that conversation and gazes out again to the city.
