Brave
George sat unpacking his lunch carefully putting it into his usual order. His two best friends sat watching in awe at his obsessive ordering. The conversation was like most days, discussion of what they saw on TV the previous night. When that ran out they always went on to talk about super heroes. They all desired to be one. It was interrupted by Lineal and his followers doing his daily rounds of harassment. George's table was an easy target.
George is short, overweight, and the definition of a socially awkward high schooler. Clark is tall, with huge-framed glasses, teeth that stick out too far, and is also in all honors. David is very short, almost a midget, he's smart just like his two friends. Their table is considered the Freshman geek table. If you had the slightest desire to be popular, you stayed clear of that table at all costs.
Today the teasing started with Lineal pushing George's food off the table, and onto the ground.
"What you gonna do?" Lineal said with crazed eyes.
"Stop it." George said quietly under his breathe.
Lineal walked away, but the teasing wasn't done for the day. He sat two tables over. Tools of torture laid out in front of him. One by one each of the members of the gang chose their weapon. Then the real teasing started. All at once they threw the handfuls of food at George's table. George stood up mad. He wanted to do something, but sat down quickly.
"What you gonna do, chubs? You ain't going to do s***, so sit your fat ass down." Lineal yelled.
Lionel's buddies all laughed. George marched over to Lineal's without thinking. Lineal laughed, and grabbed the front of his polo.
"Oh look at this fat f***, how brave."
Without thinking George took his right hand, and struck Lionel’s stomach with every fiber of anger in him. He felt like a hero from the books, and comics he read. Lineal fell down, mainly from shock not pain. George ran down the hallway waddling with every step. He felt his whole body cramp up as he got farther from the cafeteria. He knew if he stopped to catch his breath he’d be dead.
"Hey Georgie, where'd you go? I'm not going to hurt you. I promise." Lineal said with a demon like smirk, ready for a kill.
"Come out, come out where ever you are." The gang all said in unison, like something out of West Side Story.
George heard the voice getting closer. He took a few breathes then started to run again. The footsteps behind him escalated, and the sound grew with every stride. As he ran he turned slowly to see them all behind him foam at the mouth, hungry for a kill. In a panic George looked left and right for a class with an open door. When he finally found one it took every last ounce of energy to get in there before they grabbed him. He slammed the door. Then fell to the ground. His breathing heavier than ever. His face looked as though he might be going into cardiac arrest. The class looked at him confused. A few students even giggled quietly.
"Bullies." he said, still out of breathe.
The teacher was disrespected by his interruption. She demands he leave. George shamefully walks out of the safe zone back into enemy's territory. He knows they were everywhere, and on a hunt to find him. He went to his next class early. Standing by the door. Clark and David ran up to him eager to hear what happened.
"What the hell were you thinking?" David said with his usual raised eyebrows.
"We've been in high school for two months, and for two months that jerk has gone out of his way to make our lives hell. I'm just sick of it." George said with the feeling of Captain America. In his mind he is Captain America.
"I thought it was awesome. You just freaking hit him in the gut, and he went down. It was awesome. Everyone was staring at you like a rockstar." David said showing off his ugly teeth.
"It's not over, though. I can't run forever."
"But if you fight him he will kill you." David said with his eyebrows still raised.
"What would Captain America do?" That ended the discussion.
At 3:10 George was on his usual walk home. His backpack filled with every textbook he owned. If Lineal came for him he wouldn't be able to run far, or fast. In the distance the sounds of a car playing loud heavy metal music was getting closer. He knew who was in that car. George closed his eyes for a few seconds. With his eyes closed he made the transformation from geek to hero. The sounds of an engine approached faster, and faster. When George finally looked behind him he saw Lineal's beat up black 67 mustang. George didn't run. He turned around slowly putting his fists on his hips. Lineal walked over slowly. His car still running, and playing loud heavy metal. Lineal is a two time junior, he has greasy long black hair, a five o clock shadow, and his always wearing a leather jacket, and black.
"How do you wanna do this?" Lineal said itching his face.
"You and I right now. No one else, no other weapons." George said in a deep stern voice.
George put his backpack on the grass, and Lineal laid his leather jacket on the grass. All at once, they both put their fists up. They stood waiting for someone to make the first move. Lineal started with a swing at George's face. George went down. Lineal was laughing. That motivated George to get up off the ground. George knew to wait for a good chance to hit him. He took many hits waiting for his chance. Finally rage took over, and his took his right foot and kicked him in the groan. Lineal went down as if shot. George picked up his backpack, and headed home. His war was over. Even if Lineal tries to bother George again, he knew he had the courage
