The Dream

It all started at the basketball courts in Detroit. I played my first college basketball game at the University of Michigan. I haven’t been doing that great recently, and I want to show what skills I have and let them see how good I actually am. My name is Sean Summer, and I have been playing basketball ever since I was a kid. I have been working really hard ever since I was young but no matter how hard I try I can’t get better. I have one other brother, and he is an amazing basketball player. He is currently on the Detroit Pistons, and he is an amazing piece to their team. His name is Jake Summer, I’m very proud of him. In my early basketball years, I have played for my school and have tried out for many travel teams but none of them would accept me. I went to St. Joseph middle school but I only played on their B team cause I wasn’t good enough for the A team. I then went to West Side Academy for high school and again I wasn’t even close to the best player on the team, but I played up on varsity only if they were getting blown out or winning by a lot. I was just their excuse for a player.

I am now in college and I’m going to try to make the basketball team there. I know I probably won’t make the team, but I’m just giving it a chance. The day of try outs finally came. I was so nervous I even thought of not even going. Eventually, I finally had the nerve to go, and I went with my roommate who also played basketball. When I first went there, I saw the people I would be competing with, and I was very scared. I saw them dunking and making threes like it was just a layup. I really had no confidence at this point anymore, but I was just going to try as hard as I could, so I could at least try to get my name out there. I wasn’t very big coming in there; I was only 6-0 or 6-1. We started off with some ball handling drills, and I thought I did pretty well for myself, but all the other people were insane. They had crazy handles and there was no chance I could guard any of them. They were too good. We did a few other drills with shooting and defense, and I feel like I did good, but not compared to everyone else. The tryouts ended and I did not feel like I had any chance to make the team. Then every player that tryout had to meet the coach of the team, and he would tell them if they made the team or not. I really didn’t think that was necessary for me, but when my name was called I went in to talk. “Hello Coach Drew,” I said as I walked in the office. “Hi Sean, I have some news for you…” he stated. “You don’t need to tell me I already know I didn’t make the team!” I told the coach. He looked at me for a second “Actually no, you made the team kid; I saw potential in you when you were at tryouts.” I stood there for dumbfounded looking at him having a sense of excitement and confusion. “Thank you coach. I will take this as a very big privilege and will work as hard as I can to be the best I can be!” I said excitedly. A bit later, the results were put on the wall in the athletic building. Everyone was excited to see what the results were. Many other people were mad because they didn’t get on the team when they think that they deserved it. Some people were getting mad at the people on the team because they made it and the others didn’t.

Right after I figured out I made the team I went to the gym and practiced all day and night so I can improve myself and be ready for the season. I went to the gym every day, and I played basketball so I could get even better. I worked out and got in a really good shape. I wouldn’t stop playing until I was an incredible basketball player. Finally I became unstoppable, nobody could stop me. The season finally started, and our first game was against a very hard team. They were all huge but we stood our ground. We took them and gave them a hard game to win. We finally took over in the fourth quarter. We then won that game by seven points. We had an awesome game, and I feel like our team is going to go far. I had 24 points 11 steals and 13 assists. We had an amazing season and went 29-0, and we won the NCAA tournament.

After that season, I started getting offers from NBA teams. It was seriously the best year of my life. The Phoenix Suns, Washington Wizards, and Philadelphia 76ers all gave me offers to go to their teams. Finally, the day of the draft came, “With the 3rd pick in the NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers pick Sean Summer,” the commissioner announced. I got up on the stage and signed my contract. I had a sense of joy in me, but I tried to hold it back. I was finally living my dream as a NBA player.
