Snow Angels
White angels drifted from the sky, their wings feathery and light, and although their home looked bleak and sorrowful, the trees and houses below sparkled with their ephemeral caress. A warm cottage-styled resort was tucked away in the mountains with streams of smoke fluttering up toward the clouded sky. The resort lay in darkness, the moon as its guardian, with giddy teenagers barely asleep inside, waiting for the break of dawn.
But of the group that had just driven in, there were, of course, a few who sleep did not come to so easily. They had arrived by bus at an exhausting time of one in the morning and some wanted nothing more than to crash into a soft, inviting bed. Most did not even remark over the white flakes drifting down from overhead as their fatigue proved too cumbersome to care. But as stated before, there were some who did.
He stood on his fourth floor balcony – the highest at the resort – and stared off into the blissful wonderland. He tugged at his long sleeves to better cover the tips of his fingers as they were turning an unsightly purple. The frigid wind brushed past his nose, forcing his hand to rub it back to life on multiple occasions.
His body’s plight, however, he overlooked. He stared off into the black night, his eyes twinkling an even brighter shade of blue than normal, to see the white falling from the sky, like millions of pearls dancing and twinkling in the air. It was as if the snowflakes began to blot out the black, dying the clouds from gray to white.
He never admitted, out loud at least, that he was quite the romantic boy. As the glistening pearls fell from the sky, they formed a rectangular window, the panes of which made from a cherry wood. It was who was looking in the window, however, that made a fire burn within his heart.
It was a girl his age. Her hazel eyes laughed with buoyancy behind her long batting lashes. Her full lips were stretched into a careless smile as her auburn hair blew in a summertime wind. She stepped back, revealing the rest of her person. She wore a knee-length pleated skirt and a V-neck shirt with a purple rose on its side.
A buzzing in his pant pocket made the picture of her flutter away. He sighed as he ruffled through his pocket and answered his phone. His heart skipped a beat when he did.
As soon as he hung up, he shot through the apartment, – careful not to wake his slumbering roommates – put on his heavy jacket, and bounded out the door. He took the stair steps three at a time, his shoes echoing throughout the building. When his feet touched the ground floor, he searched frantically about for the door he had been told about on the phone.
All the while he thought about the angels outside, the white-feathered beauties falling from the sky only to strike mercilessly to the dirt and melt away to brown slush. He thought of them all, at first, but soon only the one consumed his thoughts. And that one, hadn’t fallen from the sky.
He burst out into the night, the cold wrapping around his body. He didn’t care, though. Before him was the angel that had enveloped his dreams for as long as he could remember. She turned to him, her eyes still laughing and her red-tinged hair being tugged with the wind. Her pink lips turned into an ethereal smile, her white teeth sparkling like the pearls around her.
She pulled her fur-lined hood over her head and laughed with a girlish squeal. She backed into the night, beckoning him after her with a slender finger. She smirked as she began running off into the night, him not far behind, with angels fluttering around them, collecting on their coats and sticking in their hair.
