Unintentional
With a feeling I have never known before, I smiled and answered the phone.
"If you were stranded on an island and you had to choose one thing to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?” he asked.
"What?" I replied confused.
"What would it be?"
"Sushi. What would yours be?"
"Poi with corn beef."
That was our first conversation.
The first day we met was my birthday. He was stoned and I was having an unbelievably s***ty day. Kai, my ex, invited me to hang out with him and his friends at the Pearlridge Mall downtown and so I did. There was Kai, four other friends and ?him’. Kai introduced me to 'him'.
"Octavia, this is Landon. Landon, Octavia. Be nice you two."
We didn't talk at all that day because 1. He was stoned and 2. He didn't really like me. Kai is my ex and Landon's his best friend. Who do you go to when you need to talk s*** about your ex?
We walked around for a bit and I saw Leo, my other ex. Two of my ex's in the same place. What are the odds of that happening? Leo approached me and it made me feel really uncomfortable. He saw Kai, Landon and everyone else. He tried to kiss me in front of them. They all saw the way I reacted when I pushed him off, but I told them it was okay. I had to leave, so I said my goodbyes and thank you's.
Then I got a text from him.
Landon kept texting me to see if I was alright. I kept telling him I was fine, but he didn't believe me. So he called me...
"Poi with corn beef."
Our first conversation.
About a week later they invited me to see Insidious 3 in Kapolei. If you knew me, you'd know I'm not a fan of horror films. I eventually built up the courage and went with them. Landon sat by me the whole time. I was curled up in my seat and covered my face throughout the movie. Landon did the thing most guys would do if you're watching a horror film and the girl is scared. He grabbed my hand.
After the movie, we all went to our friend's house. He was still holding my hand. They all got high, including Landon. We decided to sleep outside. It was freezing. I woke up before everyone and stared at the stars. It was beautiful. Landon grabbed me, pulled me closer and kissed me on the cheek.
I felt this rush of warmth. The feeling that everything was going to be alright.
We got close and started hanging out a lot. We really got to know each other and he became my best friend. He confessed his feelings for me. I was shocked and I realized that I had fallen for him unintentionally. It was a good feeling, but I was scared. My past boyfriends cheated, abused or left me for no reason. I was terrified because it was something new to me, but I let him in because I wanted to see if it was worth it. I knew it would hurt if he ever left me, but that was a risk I was willing to take.

This was an event that actually happened to me in my junior year of highschool, but I changed the names of each character, including myself. I'm currently a senior and I tried to write about that experience with a word limit. It was a bit challenging, but I made it work.
