VIRGINIA
Grandma, what was life like when you were little?
GRANDMA
(Matter of factly) Back in my day, women got paid a lot less than men. A man might get paid double what a woman would just for washing dishes! (Beat) And look what you’re wearing! We couldn’t wear anything like that! (She considers) Our teachers used to measure how far our skirts went past our hips. If they went shorter than a certain length, we’d get sent home! (Thinking) We couldn’t walk alone in the streets, especially not at night. (Slowly, thinking) If we didn’t have a man to protect us the other men would leer. Funny how that works, isn’t it? (Beat.) Oh, it was a different time back then. Men and women lived completely different lives.
