The Magin in the Music
High school showchoir is nothing like you see on TV or social media. We don’t go around singing in the halls, we don’t randomly break out in song and music does not appear out of thin air. The TV show Glee, has opened the world's eyes to the showchoir world. By watching Glee, you get the gist of showchoir; a group of high school kids singing and dancing together. But what you don’t see on the popular TV show would surprise you.
I come from a town surrounded by corn fields just outside of Omaha, Nebraska. At my school, showchoir is a big deal. That is, unless you're a jock, or part of the administration. Showchoir is a big deal if you’re in the fine arts department. To people at my school, we’re the “Showchoir nerds” or even “Gleeks”. Now I may not have been slushied in the hallway, but yes, I have been called a Gleek. But the people who base Showchoir off of what they have seen on TV, have never been to a Titanium rehearsal. We sweat, a lot. Picture 54 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors crammed up on stage dancing their butts off. Imagine girls running the hallways in heels for conditioning. 54 high school kids at school until 10 at night because they love what they do and are dedicated to it. Does Glee show that? Does the audience ever see the kids meeting at their school at 4 am to go to a competition? No. Glee doesn't show how hard kids across the United States work to accomplish something.
My varsity showchoir is like Glee in few ways.
1. We are a group of high school kids that sing and dance together.
2. We all have a passion for music.
3. We’re a family.
I am lucky to say that I have 53 students that I can consider my adoptive siblings and four staff members that are like another set of parents. That’s how showchoir and Glee are alike. We all have troubles and problems, and like the TV show, every single person is there to help us through it. Yes, we do have drama in the group. And yes, we do have showchoir couples. We’re all different. We have football players, cheerleaders, dance team members, drama kids, baseball players, track runners, the list goes on. But when it matters most, we can all come together for the one thing that brought us all together. We all have a passion for music, and we wanted to belong. Show choir is the one place where you can be yourself but still be like everyone else. A place where different is good and perfect doesn't exist.
