“The Oceans Between Us” by Eugenia Lee was such an eye- opening read. The author shows how these “little incidents” can be easily brushed off but are actually ignorant and plain rude. Surprisingly, she doesn’t put all the blame on others but also on herself. “The Oceans Between Us” shows a piece of reality from the society we live in and tells a story of prejudice as well as realization.

The author connects a biology lesson to the real world in this article. She talks about the cliques at her school that seperated themselves like little, individual islands. She eventually explains her experience with ignorance from a teacher, venting her frustrations about how unfair it was. But also, she admits that she was part of the problem for sticking to a clique herself. She says, “Instead of staying in the comfort of our islands, teens should be more open to sitting with other friends.” This article has shown me the importance of branching out and being more mindful of other people’s comfort.
