“You Look Like the Color Yellow,” by Jillian Devine, is an excellent story about someone reacting to the news of their former classmate's kidnapping story. It shows what happened to the girl as well as how he, the narrator, reacts to the story in flashbacks and in real time descriptions.
One quote from the text, “I wonder more now than ever, and gosh do I wish I held onto more of the things she had told or said to me,” really shows how deeply the narrator was affected on this. It also sends a message to the reader to appreciate what you have, because in the long-term, you won’t have it forever. “You Look Like the Color Yellow” is an amazing story that manages to fit so much backstory and detail in a two page narrative.
