"Hyphen" by Matthew Sun is a deep piece that has left me thinking about my identity. He wonders who he is, Chinese or American? His parents were from China and the family celebrates Chinese New Year. However, growing up in America meant that he had to grow up speaking English which limited his latter languauge's vocabulary and fluency.

   This experience is relatable because I have the same problem. English is spoken more often everyday than Cantonese, so my vocabulary of the second language is basic. I can only understand and speak little Chinese. The lines,"I can't tell you who you are. Nor can your father or anyone else. You must decide yourself," leads others who are not only American, to question their identity as well. Knowing who you are coming from the heart is a start to answer the question. In the end, you are who you see yourself as.
