Review of Global Grins
"Take a picture of me smiling. I want to be famous!" This simple request found Amanda wherever she went for vacation. In her piece, "Global Grins", she explains how even when she does not know the language, she can still communicate with the residents with a smile. Strangers are more than willing to smile for her when they see the camera she is holding, to her surprise. Her piece illustrates the fact that there is good in the world, and that even a small action like a smile goes a long way.
Amanda also discusses how a smile is an unspoken conversation through an anecdote. She tells of how a man in Canada and one in Hawaii asked her to take pictures of them smiling, but also how the opposite occured when she was in Paris. Instead, she took her camera out to photograph an old woman dancing, and was met with a smile of appreciation to match her own. Amanda wishes to meet more smiles on her journey, and says it beautifully herself– "A simple smile can travel around the world."
