remorseful
Poe
Has anybody ever done something bad and at the end felt remorseful? In the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Alan Poe a man kills an old man because his eye is creepy. The man hid the dead body underneath the floor. The cops come and the man becomes crazy. He tells the cops where he hid the body. Guilt made him feel badly about a horrible decision he did.
Here are some examples of how the guilt is first made felt by the man. The character waits to kill the old man (Poe7). If the man did not feel guilt he would have killed the old man right away. This shows the man was thinking about killing the old man. Just as the main character heard his own heart beating.
Here are other examples of how the guilt took over the man. The text states, “I foamed-I raved-I swore.” (Poe22). He did this action’s because his heart beat got annoying and wants the cops to leave. Another action he does is that he got really mad; he swung the chair and tore up the planks (Poe24). The man feels mad at his heart beat and decides to show the dead body to the cops. These examples show how his anger took over his actions.
Guilt can seem not much of a trouble, but at the end the guilt can take over the actions. Guilt can at the beginning make a person feel a little ashamed. At the end with the guilt inside it can take over the actions. Can guilt make a person go crazy? Poe thinks so.
