Dear Literary Canon Board of Directors,

I am writing this letter because I believe that the story The Lord of the Rings should be considered in the Literary Canon. This story is textual, alive and full of characters that will just melt your heart. J.R.R defies the concept of time, makes people love his story, and takes people places they could never imagine.  He makes people want to sit by a cozy fire and not set the book down until you have turned the final page. That is why it is one on the best fits for the literary cannon.

The first reason I believe The Lord of the Rings should be included in the literary canon is because it defies age or time. J.R.R Tolkien wrote this story in 1937, but it was published on July 29, 1954. The story was largely read then, and still continues to be one of the most popular stories of our time. Even though it was written so long ago, the story still manages to weave its themes and morals into our everyday lives. It tells us that friendships are endless, love never truly dies and that somethings will live with you forever. So, even though the author died nearly fifty years ago, the story is still timeless.

The second reason is that The Lord of the Rings is a story widely loved. When this story was first published in 1937, it was huge. Millions of people claimed it to be the best they have ever read. Even now, in 2015, it still manages to capture the hearts of young and old. Why they love it, you may ask. It is because this story is so diverse and it carries morals with its characters that makes people fall in love with them. It made so many people captivated with it, that they actually made a movie trilogy on it. That then pulled in even more fans making not only the movies, but the books as well, even more widely loved.

The final reason is because this story takes you somewhere that you never could imagine. The Lord of the Rings  is set in a land called Middle Earth where Elves, Dwarfs, Hobbits, and Men roam alike. It takes you along the journey of a little hobbit with hairy feet, as he carries a ring that can control every race, to the fires of Mount Doom where he must destroy it. Who could think of that? Its amazing the diversity and levels of characters and places that J.R.R Tolkien has brought to life. He even manages to write not only the three Lord of the Rings, but also many books based around the same place and adding new characters as he goes. That being said, the final reason is because it takes you to places you could never imagine.

As you can see, The Lord of the Rings is deserving of the literary canon because it is absolutely the best choice. Its timeless, it is widely popular, and it sets your imagination aflame. This story will forever be in the hearts of people all around the globe. It will continue to ignite the minds of young readers as time goes on, as well as still enchanting those who have already read it. And that is why i think it is the most deserving book for the honor of being placed in the literary canon.

I hope that you will consider this choice for the literary canon. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Maura T.
