MLKs Pprinciples of Non-Violence
I am writing an essay about MLK’s 6 principles of non-violence. Martin Luther King was a social activist who spoke out about and made changes regarding segregation. He was a very impactful man who helped out black people in many ways. The most notable thing about him was that he was non-violent. He didn’t think it was worth it to fight other people. He followed in the footsteps of Gandhi. His legacy left a lasting effect on people in the future.
Principle 1: Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people.
Martin Luther believed that only brave and courageous people would be able to live a life of non-violence. He is not making fun or dissing people that are violent, he just chooses a different way of life. He actually got many other people to be non-violent too. He extols people and give people props who are non-violent. He knows it is a hard thing but he also knows that only the strong and brave can do it.
Principle 2: Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding.
What Martin Luther means here is that he believes that non-violence shouldn’t be about changing ones views but understanding the opposing views. Also when you are non-violent, you are very nice and not forceful so it can lead to friendship. By understanding the opposing views, you can realize the thoughts the other person is trying to convey. This is a very good point because not enough people in the world understand what the other person has to say and it leads to miscommunication and doesn’t solve any problems.
Principle 3: Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice not people.
Non-Violence is about not fighting other people. You have to be able to be peaceful. Martin Luther King fought for non-violence against other people. He wanted to fight injustice. He wanted to beat the injustice of segregation. By harming other people it defeats the purpose of non-violence. They look to beat up evil not people.
Principle 4: Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform.
This is a confusing one. It requires a lot of thinking to decipher. What he means by this principle is that suffering is needed for non violence. But this suffering can help us think and educate us. This transformation can help lead us into a new direction. It is like a domino effect. Its really cool if you think about it.
Principle 5: Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate.
This is a big one and really the main idea of Martin Luther King and his beliefs. The belief of non-violence is about loving other people. If you hate people, it can cause you to be violent. This ties into principle 1 where love is courageous and hate is for cowards. Martin Luther King was all about love and it had an impact on other people.
Principle 6+: Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice.
What Martin Luther King was looking for was justice. Just like how non-violence fights injustice, The universe believes in justice for non-violence. People like Malcolm X was fighting for justice but he was violent so this is kind of conflicting. Either way if the universe is non-violent, it will be a better place.
Overall Martin Luther King was a great person. His idea of non-violence has left a lasting legacy on people later on. His six principles was a basis for his beliefs. He was a good person. It was very important. If you actually look at the ideas they are great.
