Snow is thought of to be pretty and fun, but the incident in Murree shook the country into seeing how deadly it really can be. At the beginning of January, around 1000 cars became stranded and 22 people died on the roads of Murree due to a large blizzard. The blizzard dumped up to 5ft of snow within the first couple hours alone. People, including 10 children were said to have frozen to death as cars eventually turned off.  Snow piled up on the windshields of cars, fuel ran out, and people who went to see beauty, ended up seeing death and fear.

A survivor, Samina, along with many others went to view the snowfall from the hilltops of Murree. She got trapped in the blizzard along with thousands of people. Samina told BBC News, "I could see death in front of me. It was like there were snow peaks built around our car...I can't explain in words what I was going through. We were praying God may help us and we shouldn't be perished in a snowstorm." The fear in her words can be sensed. She and 13 other family members had to abandon their car and find shelter at a guesthouse which they walked miles to find. Samina was finally rescued the next morning after spending the night at the shelter which was in 7,500 feet of snow. No one should have to go through something so traumatizing and dangerous, especially when it could have been prevented.

This event could have easily been avoided if there had been a weather warning. If people knew that such a large and deadly blizzard would hit, they would have planned their trips accordingly. Those who were going, would have stayed home and those who were coming back, would have stayed at their hotels. In order to prevent something from happening again, weather warnings need to be implicated. A weather channel should be created and people should be encouraged to watch it. If there is ever something like a blizzard hitting, it should be reported in the news and roads that lead to Northern areas should be blocked, so that if people decide to show up anyways, they’ll be forced to return home safely. With this incident, the blizzard should have been all over news and weather networks, and the road to Murree should have been blocked. Large news companies such as GEO or ARY should make weather networks or report weather warnings so that people are actually informed about what is coming. The nation severely needs to focus on things like this so these horrific incidents can be avoided.

Our country needs to be more alert about these things, especially storms or the weather. This incident left many devastated and scared. Survivors like Samina are probably traumatized from what they thought was going to be a fun vacation with friends and family. Overall, we need to take careful and certain precautions and procedures in order to keep people aware and safe. If not, then Murree was just the beginning of a series of tragic events.
