The Struggle of Teenagers

Teenagers are not only addicted to their phones, but they also don’t seem to care about fixing this habit. Teens spend almost more than half of their teenage years on their phones, wasting their lives away. There are so many other adventures and activities that teens should be doing, rather than putting their faces behind a screen for hours. This not only just takes time away from their lives, but it also damages them. It affects their mental health in various ways. A negative overload of screen time on teens is so non beneficial as it can cause laziness, depression, body image issues, comparisons with others, and brain rot. “Anxiety and depression in themselves can be a result of too much cell phone use. Studies show that teens that spend large amounts of time on social platforms suffer from higher levels of mental health issues”(BNI Treatment Center). All of these effects hold significant weight on one's future. Most teenagers do not have the self courage to put their phones down and make a change for them. However, the sooner teenagers realize what they’re doing to themselves, the more they will understand that spending so much time on their phones has only caused them problems.  On the other hand, there are ways to fix this concerning addiction. One way to make progress is to begin with small steps and then gradually build up to larger ones. This will encourage people to pursue other activities, rather than just sitting and looking at a screen. For example, if one picks up a book, instead of their phone and they start with reading five pages per day, it begins to broaden their perspective, showing that there are alternatives. This also leads to seeking more motivation, which can be tremendously beneficial. As time goes on, five pages a day will become effortless, causing one to read increasingly more, with the potential that this habit could keep growing.  This encourages spending time away from one’s phone rather than becoming infatuated with it.  Other alternatives could be walking, any source of exercise, or even watching television. This could be more beneficial than sitting on a cellular device. This is a serious concern for not only teenagers but also for the future world and incoming generations. This is not only a common topic but it is a topic known to have impacts on teenagers specifically. Personally, I think that if teenagers did not have phones, not only would their lives be different, but it would greatly benefit them. Phones can serve a useful purpose for teenagers and children, however, they don’t need to be as technologically advanced as they are today. A basic flip phone would do the perfect job for people who need a phone primarily for communication. Social media is entirely unnecessary and should be avoided because it does nothing but harm, both now and in the future. Many people become diagnosed with healthcare issues because of their cell phones. Taking time away from the screen can positively affect behavioral problems and mindsets. Therefore, selecting a simpler device for a form of communication and avoiding social media as a whole, can lead to a better, healthier lifestyle and improved well-being.
