Teenage Vaping in a Nutshell
The issue of teenage vaping has been prominent in the United States since the introduction of e-cigarettes as a means to help cigarette-addicted people and reduce cigarette consumption. However, e-cigarettes themselves soon became a significant issue, especially among teenagers in school. Although bans are being placed on e-cigarettes for all people under the age of 18 and heavy taxes are being levied in many states, the number of e-cigarette smokers remains a significant issue among teenagers. Regarding the issue of vaping among teenagers, the government of the United States requires specific regulations that balance the maintenance of the original intention of e-cigarettes and, at the same time, eliminate the possible production of more future smokers caused by e-cigarettes. Therefore, despite the ban, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is constantly hindered by various concerns about e-cigarettes and the lack of proper, effective regulation. To effectively understand the difficulties and impacts behind the scenes of the ban cast on e-cigarettes and their relative effectiveness, there are many controversies on e-cigarettes, including national health issues e-cigarettes brought about and the current market of e-cigarettes.
The primary issue about the introduction of e-cigarettes that immediately became outstanding is the increase of minor smokers. Although adults may benefit from e-cigarettes, which are to relieve smoking addictions and harms, their impact on minors is severe. Compared with the target audience that e-cigarettes were initially designed for, who are grown adults already exposed to cigarettes or tobacco products, minors have never been exposed to such products, and the e-cigarettes will therefore cause more severe damage to the respiratory system compared to adults, and more accessible to get addictive. In 2019, an outbreak of the “e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury” (EVALI) epidemic broke out in the United States. Victims were hospitalized with lung scarring and inflammation. With the changeable characteristics of e-cigarettes, companies were able to add various chemicals without consequences, maximizing joy but causing unknown damage to the lungs. Compared with the damage caused by traditional cigarettes, however, e-cigarettes do not show a direct correlation with lung cancer. In contrast, traditional tobacco products can directly lead to lung cancer due to tars, which e-cigarettes do not contain. However, what most e-cigarettes do contain is nicotine, which is the core of addiction that led to many teenagers unable to withdraw from it and even continuing to pursue the path of smoking outside of vapes into real cigarettes or tobacco products.
Imposing strict bans seems to be a viable solution to stop teenage smokers from continuing smoking. However, bans might decrease the overall national health and even boost the number of smokers in the long term. Among teenagers, groupings are very common in schools and outside, which can be the primary cause of the spread of vaping among teens. To incorporate into the group and avoid being an outcast or being distinctive from others, humans tend to be more collective when encountering a crisis. As the bond between the members of the group becomes more robust, the spreading of vapes becomes more efficient, where a close friend can easily persuade one into smoking and soon becomes addicted. The process has become the primary cause of the spreading of vapes among teenagers especially. At the same time, without e-cigarettes, teenagers may turn to more dangerous and exotic products to uplift their experiences. Overall, vapes are intended to simulate the experience of smoking while reducing the damage traditional cigarettes bring. Nevertheless, it might have the opposite effect on teenagers, tempting them to try out more harmful pieces to mimic the loss of the “healthiest” product in the market.
In the e-cigarette market, the manufacturers are attempting to craft different flavors to appeal to the younger generation, who are tempted to try out the introductory products that are not as harmful as the traditional ones. With various combinations of liquids and chemicals in the vapes, the market provided smokers with more options; vapes are slowly infiltrating society and harming the overall health of the nation. As more bans are being placed on e-cigarettes, unexpectedly, it is boosting the growth of more companies that take different forms other than refillable vapes but flavored and disposable e-cigarettes. With the bans employed on E-cigarettes, e-cigarettes are becoming less transparent and detectable among young adults, hindering the overall effectiveness of the prohibitions cast upon the e-cigarette market. The FDA requires more vital and more effective policies to ban all forms of e-cigarette products circulating in the black market. Overall, its bans are increasing the market’s availability for the consumers willing to attempt a taste of outlawing and the excitement it brings about.
Along with the various flavors the manufacturers brought into the market to lure teenagers into developing the habit of smoking, the introduction of vape advertisements is also an essential factor in the quick and vast spread among young teenagers. Through the constant exposure of advertisements among young adults, companies can implement the idea of vaping through an invisible influence. It was not until 2019 that the FDA released its first anti-vaping advertisement, using the media to spread the message. However, as social media became more developed in recent years, the FDA continued to fall behind on an effective strategy to spread the message of anti-vaping. Although various advertisements regarding anti-vaping are currently being posted, they lack variety and effectiveness compared to the trending e-cigarette advertisements published by the big companies that tempt teenagers into smoking.
An effective tactic to halt the spread of e-cigarettes among teenagers is a pivotal step that the FDA is required to take. To solve the root of the problem, the government must put more oversight on the market to stop the e-cigarette from continuing damaging the younger generation. Currently, the FDA has worked its efforts through the raising of age requirements on e-cigarette smokers, as well as levying heavy taxes on vapes. From the current state of the effectiveness regarding the taxes, it is effective in reducing the number of teenage smokers. A study by the Centre for Health Economics & Policy Studies at San Diego State University found that a $1 increase in e-cigarette taxes is associated with a 14-26% decrease in vaping among high-school pupils. The study also pointed out that the reduction in teenage vaping is also related to the decline in teenage drinking, which is also an essential issue among adolescents. Drunk driving, one of the significant incidents related to car accidents and deaths, can also be, in turn, halted through the imposed tax on e-cigarettes, as drinking and smoking are often related.
As of now, the FDA requires more effective regulations regarding teenage smoking while maintaining the original intention of e-cigarettes relieving tobacco addictions and reducing the damages of real cigarettes. However, it is rather tricky regarding the approach of such a strategy and the hindrance the FDA is currently facing with teenage smoking. Regarding national health issues, the marketing strategy of e-cigarette manufacturers, as well as the continued spread of e-cigarettes among young adults, and its potential impact on the future of the nation overall, it is very concerning that the FDA requires a firm approach with no delay.
