“Bagels are easy to make and nutritious, delicious meal,” said Addison Whelan, 17-year-old bagel expert and has kindly shared her tips and tricks in the competitive bagel making world.

She perfected this art over two years in the making, after getting inspired by Tik Toks of other bagel enthusiasts making their delicious creations. That's when she knew she had to hop on this trend and perfect it. The journey to making the perfect bagel starts at the grocery store, she opts for the classic everything bagel that looks the best that day then she starts scavenging for the dairy section. “One day I went into Bruegger's Bagels and tried veggie cream and NEVER looked back,” she states when asked her ideal bagel topping.

Whelan describes her initial experience as “not good because it was under toasted,” which she later outlines as a major flaw in the bagel making process. However, since then she has perfected the art of bagel toasting and shmeering.

Whelan’s tips for successful bagel making is that “it is essential that your toaster is at max heat,” says Whelan. She ascertained that 30 seconds in the toaster at the highest heat created the perfect golden brown bagel she strived to achieve. Then she describes that you have to take out your knife of choice and glob on an even, thick layer of veggie cream cheese. Spread the cream cheese like you're painting a smooth canvas, each stroke spreading richness and flavor across the surface. Then put on the top bagel, cut it in half, and enjoy this extremely exciting experience.

Some challenge that rookies, and Whelan at the beginning stages of her passion for bagels, face is under toasting, not sufficient cream cheese ratio, and not sandwiching the bagel, but Whelan says, “Don't give up, it can be unpredictable following the toaster you have.”

Whelan recounts her last bagel experience as “delectably yummy and good,” especially since she opened up a fresh container of veggie cream cheese which will usually last her around a week. Whelan gains her credibility from Friends and family who flock to Whelan for the best, brilliant bagels, navigating the world of bagel making her tips and insights a guide new bagel connoisseurs on their journey to ensure the perfect bagel.

This is a piece about my good friend and bagel expert Addison Whelan. We both share an intense love for bagels and although it was hard for me to jump on board with some of her bagel-making details she is definitely more experienced than me. I also love writing about simple things that make my day like bagels.
