Summer Jobs
Throughout the summer I take on many different jobs and with those jobs, and I get multiple customers. This past summer I would do my customer's yard work for them.
On a hot late August day, I arrive at the last house in my rotation for the week. This is my least favorite yard to cut because it takes the longest and the biggest one. I haven’t been there for over two weeks, the grass is like a hay field. No matter where I look all I can see is the long, thick grass. I start to unload all of my equipment and I notice that one of my weed trimmers is gone. But I then remember that I had let a friend borrow it. I grab the gas jugs and start to fill up my equipment. Once I’m done filling all of the equipment I start the first part of this yard, weed trimming.
I start my weed trimming by going around any obstacles: trees, bushes, and all of the fencing that runs along the property lines. After I’m done trimming around those things, I move to the bigger obstacles, the house, and any other exterior buildings. Once I am done with all of my weed trimmings I move to the most important part, cutting the grass.
Cutting the grass is the most important part because it is the thing everybody sees the most. I decide that I am going to cut diagonal today. Once I start cutting the grass I remember why I love doing it, I get to see the transformation from the yard looking overgrown to a nicely cut yard. The hot sun beating down on the back of my neck feels like it is a thousand degrees, not to mention, the air is thick enough that it seems like you could taste it. After hours of sitting on the tractor, the end seems like it is near. I feel like I have hours of cutting left to do but in reality, it's only about 20 minutes. I come to a stop on the tractor as I finish the yard. The last step is to take a leaf blower and clear off the sidewalk and blow off all of my equipment. While I'm finishing up, my client returned home and she said, “ I’m so happy with how the yard looks, you always do a great job.”
Once I pack up everything, and before I leave, I glance back at the yard and I feel happy with how it turned out. I tell myself, green grass grows so quickly, I’ll be back again in two weeks to do it all over again.
