Essay Contest: Difference
I have been helping my little brother with his homework every night since his first day of school. I have helped my brother in many ways over the years because a lot of times, I was the only one who would be willing to help him.
I am a lot like my brother and I see myself in him. I try to help him out as much as I possibly can. I read to him every night to help him fall asleep when he was younger. I taught him how to ride a bike. I taught him how to spell, read, write, and draw.
I think there are certain things that are not acts of kindness. They are just acts of human decency. Holding the door open for someone or smiling at someone is not an act of kindness. It is being a human.
Helping your little brother grow up is an act of kindness. My brother is 12 now and he would not know how to multiply fractions if it wasn’t for me. He gets good grades and any time he is ever struggling with something, I walk him through the steps to understand.
To me, an act of kindness is helping someone with something even though you have things on your own plate too. I helped my brother grow up while I myself was still growing up. I had homework every night too. I had chores and other responsibilities, but I still cut time out of my day to make sure his responsibilities were taken care of too. A lot of times, an act of kindness is putting others before yourself. Now, it makes sense for a high schooler to help their younger sibling. But I have been helping my brother since I was seven years old.
Everyone has different perceptions of acts of kindness. However, it is important to remember that there is a difference between kindness and human decency.

I wrote this piece because it is my experience with kindness. I wrote this piece because I don't like hearing people say they held a door open for someone so it makes them a good person.
