Holiday of Memory
An evening in December. The smell of the deep wilderness green trees seeps through the house. The scent slowly creeps under my nose; I find myself smiling. I look outside at the white, bright snow falling, tip-tap, tip-tap. Christmas is my favorite holiday. As I enter the fireplace room, atop the mantel sits the candle. The aroma of the Yankee candle: Fraser Fir edition. My favorite.
Sitting in the chair next to the Christmas tree, admiring the beauty of the lights, ornaments, and many memories we've made as a family putting up this tree. The faint noise of jingle bells ringing in the distance, except it's just the amazon Alexa, nevertheless still adds to the essence of this holiday. The red and green lights flicker on the tree. Underneath, the many presents sit steady, awaiting to be opened. Those presents are tempting me; it's like telling a mouse not to eat the cheese in front of him. The variety of gifts from big to small, what could be in them?
Born an only child, it's hard for my parents to let go of some things, and Christmas is one of them. At the age of 16, Santa still visits my house every year.
My father always said, "I love Christmas because you love Christmas."
Thinking about next Christmas being my last at home saddens me. I remember every Christmas, the many gifts I received. However, the best gift I can never forget is the many memories I've made with the people I love. I know how hard it will be when I leave and my parents are alone. As an only child, I have a close relationship with both of my parents, and Christmas was our holiday.
Visiting the mall every year to get the annual Santa photo.
"Santa in his big red suit will come tonight and bring joy to all the little children just like me!"
I used to say this to my mother. She would laugh as we listened to Christmas music. My mother and I always loved the Justin Bieber holiday album, our favorite. We would sing “Mistletoe” on the top of our lungs on the way home from school. From the movie Elf once said, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
One thing that was always important to my family was making sure other less fortunate people could experience the greatness of this holiday. We are given a list of items someone needs but can not afford, and we surprise them on Christmas morning. Doing good deeds has always been something that gives me gratitude. We also donate to many shelters during the holidays. This is what Christmas is all about, after all, spending time with each other, spreading happiness and joy.
