What Goes Around Comes Around

Everyone has had to make a decision in his or her life at one point. Whether it was a small decision or a big one that had a huge effect, everyone has made one. Although many people have a hard time making even the smallest decisions, they still have to choose. Which is the right decision? For some people, they are scared to make the wrong decision and think that what goes around comes around, so would rather pick the right one. Now, after what happened to me I believe the phrase “what goes around comes around” is true.
In the 5th grade, my school had an after school floor hockey tournament for a week every year. I lived just 4 blocks from St. Paul of the Cross, which was where I attended grade school, and would usually walk home once school was over. My friends and I all walked home together. We liked to be together after school, it was fun for us. Although, our parents would only let us if we walked straight home, so they wouldn’t get worried. One day after the floor hockey tournament, my best friend Gracie and I were the only ones who walked home that day. As we walked outside of our school gymnasium, we noticed it looked sort of grey out. We didn’t think much of it, and began to make our way home.
We took the same route everyday. We walked across Northwest Highway and down Washington Street the entire way home. Just after crossing the street, there’ a parking lot that leads uptown. Uptown there is lots of things to do, one including the Oberweis Ice Cream store that wasn’t too far across the parking lot. As we walked a little bit passed the parking lot we talked about how good ice cream sounded to us at that moment. We debated back and forth on whether we should get some, and if it was worth risking getting in trouble from our parents because we were supposed to be walking straight home. Luckily for us, I found five dollars in my backpack, enough to split a milkshake.
We went for it.
We ran back towards and through the parking lot excited to get our ice cream. As we were walking in I said sarcastically, “Watch it rain the second we start to walk home again”. I think I may have cursed us.
We walked in the chilly ice cream shop and ordered a cookie dough milkshake to share. It took longer than expected to make the milkshake, which meant we would be home really late. We knew we were late so once we got our shakes, we ran out of the store, back through the parking lot, and sure enough we heard a big thunder.
Gracie and I stopped and looked at each other wide eyed. As we began running again, we felt raindrops, small and light at first. But, a few seconds later it was hardcore rainfall as we were stilling running home. We both felt so guilty that we went to get ice cream without telling our moms, that we threw the shakes out at the next garbage can we saw, not even halfway through them.
The rain did not let up anytime soon. We ran the rest of the way home, walking into my house, soaking wet.
As my mom answered the front door her exact words were, “what took you guys so long?” We both looked at each other and I could tell we were both debating if we should tell the truth or not. We responded with, “Well… it’s a long story”.
After telling her the story, she just laughed and was glad we were okay because she was beginning to worry. Lucky for us we didn’t get in trouble. We still felt guilty that we lied, but now looking back at it we still laugh about it.
Decisions like that are fun to look back on and laugh about. As we are still best friends, Gracie and I still think about it and laugh. It’s one of the memories from our childhood that we shred together. Now that I look back on it I’m happy we made the decision to go to Oberweis because if we didn’t, we wouldn’t have the story to think back on and laugh about. What makes the story better is that it started raining. If it hadn’t started raining I’m sure we would’ve been happier then, but now it wouldn’t really be a story we could talk about today.
Like I said before, what goes around comes around.
