Do you read dystopias? What keeps you drawn into them? Dystopias are an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. I believe that these stories are a way for people to imagine a perfect world and what could happen with it. That’s why I believe dystopias are growing

Dystopias are growing because they’re a way to escape reality. An example of that is “The Veldt” in this dystopia there is a nursery and whatever you can imagine it can appear in the walls. “All the most enjoyable creations of an imaginary world”. That is a quote from the short story that is one way to escape reality. One way to escape reality is to listen and imagine the vivid details that the story gives. For example Harrison Bergeron is a great example. “ but Harrison looked like a walking junkyard. In the race of life, Harrison carried three hundred pounds. And to offset his good looks, the H-G men required that he wear at all times a red rubber ball for a nose, keep his eyebrows shaved off, and cover his even white teeth with black caps at snaggletooth random.” This is a great example of the details you an imagine the way Harrison looks.

Suspense a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. That is the definition of suspense, dystopias are a great way of getting that suspenseful state. Dystopias can bring great suspense for example, “Ten With a Flag”  “He pulled away, turned to Dr. Jones and said ‘we’ll take the option”. After he made this choice the cops came in and took him away for choosing to kill the baby.” This was a great way to show suspense in dystopias when Johnny wants to know why there is a flag and when he chooses his option central stops him from doing it. “There was the shriek of a door being torn from its hinges. Screams and barking cries of consternation came from the television set.” When this happens it puts suspense on what’s going to happen to Harrison how is this going to end. Again a great way to show suspense

Have you ever wanted to know what will happen in the future? Well this genre is a great way to show that.”They walked down the hall of their HappyLife Home, which had cost them thirty thousand dollars with everything included. This house which clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them. Their approach was sensed by a hidden switch and the nursery light turned on when they came within ten feet of it. Similarly, behind them, in the halls, lights went on and off automatically as they left them behind.” This is futuristic if I have seen it myself they have robots to do everything for them. They get fed, bathed, and they do everything. Ten with a flag is another example of the future.”Central is in control”. During the end of the story she gets in the car and then the central government takes control of the car and takes her home. This is a great way to show future because she isn’t driving.

Maybe the future with robots and perfects world isn’t the best. Perfect worlds aren’t always the best. Dystopias are growing and will be a big genre for a while. These stories are great for everyone to read.
