Why are the FTC not allowing John Deere owners to repair their own tractors?
SF(successful farming 3/9/22) said “200,000 farmers file complaints about not allowing farmers to repair their own tractors because of the FTC.” Farmers are resorting to hacking their own equipment to try and get around the ban using Ukrainian firmware and European software. Instead of the good old fashioned wrench a farmer now needs software and a computer to find and fix problems with their equipment.
One of the reasons why farmers should be allowed to repair their own tractors and equipment is so that they don't have to spend money on allowing repairmen to fix it for them. When it comes to harvest season farmers have no time to harvest their crops if they have to wait for days to get their equipment fixed. This could make the farmers miss the peak of harvesting for their crops. SF (successful farming) 3/9/22) "These constraints are both time and money consuming. The FTC should take action to ensure that farmers and independent mechanics have the freedom to repair their equipment in a timely and cost-effective manner."
One of the most affected things by this rule is that farmers don't have the time to get it done in time SF(Washington post 3/9/22). “Say that it usually will take days or even months to get your tractor repaired and many farmers have had to miss the harvest season because of their tractor getting fixed." The elderly who are about to retire must spend their retirement funds to repair their tractor. Prices have gone up because of inflation that is happening right now, it costs about 200 dollars more than just repairing it by themselves. The article by (vise 3/9/22) said,
“That a repair service charges $264 to tune up a tractor vs. saving 67 percent by doing it yourself for $85. Regular maintenance of any lawn equipment makes it operate at peak performance.” There are also restrictions on the small businesses, the workers, and even to consumers that are having to get it fixed by repairmen. That is why allowing farmers to do it themselves can help them with not paying so much to get it fixed by repair people.
Cost of everything has been going up in the past 6 month and many farmers are paying way more than what they spent on it. A John Deere X584 48 inch deck for about 8,000 dollars when it is purchased. Now say it needs to get it fixed and it has to be taken to a repair person or the repair man needs to come to work on it. Both take time and money. The last paragraph said where it would be $264 to fix it from a repair so it would be about 8,700 dollars on it. Then just do it by themselves where it would be about 1,000 dollars less. SF(successful farming 3/9/22) says that “While the right to repair affects many products, agricultural markets are Farmers and ranchers have been specifically mentioned as becoming increasingly concentrated and less competitive, which means they must pay more to fix their products.” The National Farmers Union, six affiliates, Farm Action, and four consumer groups filed a complaint with the FTC alleging that Deere illegally forces farmers to pay a dealer when their tractors or other equipment fail. The groups are requesting that the FTC order Deere to discontinue it’s. (Vise 3/9/22)"policy of withholding from its customer's diagnostic software and other information required to repair Deere equipment they own."
Gas prices are also one of the most expensive things out there. For the people who can't bring their tractor to get repaired they have to get someone to haul their equipment to the repair shop. Some people don't have a John Deere repair shop so they have to pay for the amount of gas repairmen have to use to get to them. Do people want to see a bunch of angry farmers or not see a bunch of angry farmers? If the answer is no, then let the owners of equipment have the ability to fix their own machines plain and simple.
