In every school they assign homework. Teachers always say that it’s for practice, and that we need it. We have seemed to get used to having homework every single day, since at least 3rd grade. I’m a student that entered 9th grade, and to this point I have had an overload of homework. All this homework doesn’t let us get home and rest. Don’t you think? I mean, every single day we have a lot of really long, and boring homework.

I think that when we get home we should be able to enjoy the activities that we like to do, instead of being stressed for the amount of homework we have for the next day. Mollie K. Galloway and Denise Pope made a study about how homework is related to stress. 67.8% of the students that where asked what caused the majority of stress in their lives, responded school work and homework. 65% of students said that they were always, or very often stressed because of school work. This means that most of the students are stressed only because of school. Teachers might not realize it, but on top of school we have personal life and hobbies. And hobbies are difficult to do when thinking about tomorrow’s homework right?

Why should we do homework until late hours instead of just going to sleep and getting some rest time? I personally don’t get enough hours of sleep the majority of school night. Apparently most kids don’t either. Studies show that only 20% of adolescents are getting the nine hours professionals recommend of sleep. Not getting these precious hours of sleep might cause us to fall asleep in class, get late to school, feel down, tired, and sleepy because of a lack of sleep. Hasn’t this happened to you? It feels horrible doesn’t it? And it’s very difficult to concentrate on school when were tired.

In a lot of schools they have a maximum time that teacher should assign for homework per day. In our school it doesn’t work. Teachers might think that homework can be done in about 15 minutes but actually it takes us about 30 minutes or more to complete. In the United States there’s kids that have just started school but still have to do from 5-9 hours of homework a night. Isn’t that insane? There’s even some that have to sleep only 5 hours to be able to finish all their homework. We need sleep to be able to do well on school the next day. Is all of this fair?

Homework might be effective, but teachers have to be very careful and not overload in homework to the point where it’s not effective, but tiring. Not doing our homework isn’t a solution. None of us want to get bad grades because of homework. I would never risk my grade only for not doing my homework. So what should we do not have homework? I don’t suggest that teachers should stop assigning homework because as they say it might be useful. I think a solution for the overload of homework, would be for all the teachers to meet up and talk about the homework of each class. This would work because they can agree in how much homework assign per day. Don’t you think this would be a way for everyone to be happy? Schools have to be careful not to make the mistake of overloading on homework. If they do, learning in students can change in a significant way.
