Vanity
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin." Matthew 6:28
I'm vain.
And yet, I feel fine admitting it.
Because I know everyone else is the same.
We're all vain.
We spend so much time in our lives fussing over ourselves.
Is my hair alright?
Do I look fat in this?
Will I make a fool of myself?
What if I do something wrong?
Will everyone then think I'm an idiot?
You might make a big speech.
Then stuff it up half way through
You become the joke of the entire audience,
Feeling yourself go red,
And wishing the Earth would just swallow you up where you're standing.
You think that your dignity is lost,
And that the audience sees right through the layer of thin jest,
And sees the embarrassed you attempting to hide underneath.
But give it time.
A week.
A month.
All we be forgotten.
Because people are too busy caught up in their own lives,
To care about the mistakes anyone else has made.
They're too busy worrying about their own difficulties.
Unless someone else's mistake directly affects them.
Then of course they will remember.
Because we only notice things that concern ourselves.
And others those most dear to us.
But even then, those most dear to us bring us happiness and joy.
So of course we care about them,
In the same way we care about ourselves.
Because they are part of our lives.
The only difference between each and everyone of us and our vanity,
Is how easily we show it.
So, let me now ask you.
Do these shoes look good on me?
