What is art worth?
I want to give you something. I want to give you something that you can cherish and remember. I want to give you my outlook on something that has been hidden beneath the depths of others opinions. I want to tell you what art is.
The word art can be devoured and taken advantage of. Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as a painting or sculpture. Art is beauty and hard dedicated work of a pallet of paint and a few paint brushes. Art is a delicate pattern of colors and designs sent from someone in need to deliver a message. That is what art is.
How many times have you come across an art piece that is blotches of paint with no sense of direction? Did it fill you with a sense of the artists expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, or does it fill you with confusion or even boredom? Do you think this art piece is worth its price? Yes, I understand that people have different perspectives on art work, but when it comes down to creative, soulful art , many people don't realize they are not looking through their eyes, but the eyes of others.
These questions may infuriate people that feel as if I am threatening their right to have an opinion on art. But I am not. I am simply asking these questions to bring awareness to the fact that this may not be their own opinion. I want people to see past other peoples opinions, and see through their own eyes.
Did you know according to the newspaper the UK Telegraph, on February 3, 2010 the famous artist Giacometti’s sculpture L’homme Qui Marche was sold for $104,327,006– at the time, this was the highest amount of money ever paid for a work of art. This walking bronze man is worth more than 30 private jets, 100 mansions, and 450 10 carat diamonds. Art can be priceless, it means so much- but to who?
That leads to a related question, what should art be worth?
I went to a well-decorated, inviting restaurant called Bistro du Midi. It was before I went to see the Nutcracker on a cold winter night, the air was beautiful and had a sense of holiday spirit. I took one step into this fancy dining establishment, and found that my jacket was slipped off my back, and into a well organized coat closet. We started out with appetizers, seven dollars a plate of their finest fried honey raviolis. Their main dishes were twenty-six to thirty dollars. That really got my attention, but the price of the food wasn’t the only thing that caught my eye. We had the party room, fancy and elegant, that had several paintings that I couldn’t quite understand. There was an art piece that was just a painting of a peach with thick orange leaves in the middle of a big white piece of paper. I didn’t understand why a picture like that would be hanging in such nice restaurant. I asked John, my parents’ friend, if he liked it. He said no. He asked the waiter about this painting. He said it was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I was furious.
I was ferocious.
I glared at the waiter. Did he actually like that painting? The waiter argued that it was by a great artist, so it must be great. The reason I was so upset was because this painting should not be “great” just because it is was painted by this a “great” artist. This painting was decent for a six year old that said this isn’t my best drawing. That is not what art is.
When I went to the institute of contemporary arts about a year ago, I found an amazing piece of art that had pieces of charcoal hanging from a string of some sort. It was so beautiful in my eyes, and I found myself standing there for quite a while. To me, that is what art is. It doesn't matter if you like that art piece, because that exhibit, was art in my eyes, and no one can change that.
I can’t change your artistic opinion, I don’t want to do that, but I want you to really see if it is your opinion. For the art of the world, show your opinion.
