Fight with the power of words
Fight with the power of words
Pretty women wonder where my secrets lie
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion models size
But when I try to tell them they think I’m telling lies
I say
It’s in the reach of my hips
The stride in my step
The curl of my lips
I am a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That’s me
By Maya Angelou
It took this poem to see the true beauty within myself. Truly an inspirational poem. The poem has my personality down pat it has attitude but strength and shows the true meaning of beauty which doesn’t come in any size it. But this is not the only thing that took an impact; using words also had made history in numerous situations just like Maya Angelou used her words which influenced me . The pen is mightier than the sword.
Gandhi was a great example of how words are power. One of his famous quotes was “an eye for an eye will only make the world go blind”. Which is true because if you just keep fighting keep killing what will really change. More deaths more fighting to true to get back than even more deaths it just keeps going a never ending cycle. These situations can be resolved with words. Honestly a person would respond a lot better with you coming to just talk than fighting and unnecessary war. He also led India’s independence movement from the British in 1930-40s by speaking to the people; which than led to a non-violent protest. Gandhi had led an initiative to clean up the area, build new schools and hospitals. He was then arrested because he caused unrest but then he had talked his way out of jail. After long marches and overdue time Gandhi had become successful in fighting discrimination and political oppression with nonviolence. Gandhi had help India gain their independence back. That just shows that words have an impact on society.
Now another great example would be Martin Luther King Jr. He led plenty of marches and gave inspirational speeches. In which he was influenced by Gandhi and his peaceful ways of going about fighting for equality. He had used nonviolent disobediences in the civil rights movement. There was sit ins in which the students would sit at the other lunch tables at the restaurants instead of the color sections. They had gone through verbal and physical abuse but in the end 27 southern countries lunch counters unsegregated. When people had said that he might be endangering the children who attend his speeches; he then said "Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community, which has constantly refused to negotiate, is forced to confront the issue." Mainly to make a change he choice a method in which not to fight but the method of civil disobedience; making the white man look bad because no one’s fighting back. But then it came to light of what was going on was wrong, which in some cases the government had came in to help the African Americans and defended the constitution. They received their rights to be equal they had been fighting for and deserved without using violence.
Today is more so of violence than any talking or trying to work it out. Like when a innocent baby got shot because they tried to get to the dad and she got shot instead. Is it really worth it to know that you might hurt innocent people? Like what Gandhi had said “An eye for an eye will only make the world blind” and our world is going blind. This is not what Gandhi or Dr. King would want to see. All this killing going on and fighting for what because one person doesn’t agree with another or you don’t like that person so the key is violence. In reality that makes this generation look like savages. Dr. King has worked so hard and fought for us to be equal. What do we do start to have hate within races. Black on black crimes, gangbanging, killing, stealing, this is not the life he dreamed up for us at all. We should look at the bigger picture of what our ancestors done for us.. What did those marches mean and what about all those sit ins walking for miles was that all for nothing to take it all for granted. Why not just work together in peace and harmony or even try and talk out the issue or write your problem down because in all reality the pen is mightier than the sword. I will make the difference and not have violence as my option because it’s not worth it this world can be ugly but there is also beauty.
