Beauty in the wake of brutality
Beauty in the wake of Brutality, look for it.
Beauty is defined as a combination of qualities that pleases the intellect or moral sense. Brutality is defined as savage physical violence; great cruelty. The Question is can beauty exist in the wake and the prime of brutality? Yes it can; almost any situation has beauty in it. In English class this year our class read The Book Thief by Mark Zusak. The story was based in world war 2 and the holocaust. There was a young German girl named liesel who lost her brother on a train on their way to meet their new foster parents Hans Hubermann and Rosa Hubermann. She’d have to continue on a whole new journey Liesel and others can be a light in dark times. Beauty will exist in the wake of brutality.
At first it may seem that brutal is cruel pure violence from these stories. Think of the war in Vietnam, whether you believe that it was a waste or not you will know that it was the epitome of brutal. The jungles were filled with weeds massive bugs, and traps could be put around any corner. Soldiers did not even know who the enemy was ,because of their guerrilla warfare. Or think of the holocaust when over 6,000,000 jews were massacred. Many were killed in the front lines and other minorities crushed. More currently the typhoon in the philippines has killed 3,000 filipinos (Eckardt). The typhoon has caused millions of dollars of property damage to many filipinos, look at any of the pictures on the internet for sure you will see destruction. the philippines right now is a mass grave,15 dead are being found an hour (Eckardt). 13 million people have been affected, and 4 million people have been displaced. brutality is everywhere.
Yes brutality is rampant everywhere, but so is beauty, in every situation look for beauty. Think of a time that was brutal in your life; you should be able to think of someone trying to help whether it was obvious or it took a while to know, someone was able to be beauty in a time of brutality. Lets go back to vietnam February 10, 1970, we know that the war was brutal. John Baca was on a recoilless rifle team, his team was ambushed during a night mission. He and a squad of 8 members were with him when a grenade came out of the forest and landed next to him and his squad. John then proceed to do the most unselfish action in that situation he put his helmet over the grenade and jumped on it with is body. When the grenade exploded, all of the energy, and the lethal fragments went into his body. He knew he would be certainly killed, but he did it anyway because of his selflessness he saved his 8 squad members, from bad injuries or death. It was truly beautiful, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor a year later(American Valor). Now think back to the holocaust, Liesel and the Hubermanns and other great individuals were hiding jews, feeding them, saving their lives by risking their own because they are hiding them, if anyone found out that they were being hiding jews. They would be murdered or put in prison camps themselves. Yet the Hubermanns were beauty in it all that brutalness around them, even their neighbors laughed at them and called them jew lovers when they tried to help It took them a lot of courage to help feed the jews in front of their peers; they could have been abandoned by their neighborhood(Zusak). Regarding the typhoon Great Britain had donated 70 million pounds to the philippines and children in need. Many countries have sent part of their militaries and national guard.China and the United States have had their own militaries sent to disperse food and help give temporary housing to the so many filipino victims that are hurting in this time. Many others realize it, and they want to help so they have by donating money.
Many people say that even in hard time there will be no beauty that it is only just brutality, they say that there is no beauty in my philippines victims losing their housing. Partly what they say is true, but these people have tunnel vision they don't see the big picture they don’t see anyone making it beautiful because they don’t look for them. If you look you can find it. Its that simple. It is shown in the real world if you look back on the holocaust your first thought is of the death and destruction but you if take just a 2nd look you will see that many people hid jews in the underground. You will see that so many people are helping.
The light in the darkness will always be there no matter the situation even if you cant see it at first. There will always be beauty in the wake of brutality, whether it is in war or natural disaster or in a death in everyday life it will always be there. I challenge you, if you see brutality to be one of the men or women that can make it beautiful. Be a Liesel in the modern world, or like John Baca, do the right action in bad situations. Even if you can’t do anything, look out for the beauty in the world, and encourage the people that are helping.
