My Mom and Matt Lauer

1.13.14

I was woken up by the bright shining beams of sun streaming through my window. It was my favorite way to be woken up; to be woken up by the sun. I smiled at my room because I loved the ‘happy’ feeling it gave. My ears caught a familiar tune on TV and I immediately was flooded with excitement. I ran through the hall, down the stairs and into the living room. As I predicted my mother was there watching the TODAY show. The cheering and applauds from the audience filled the air. What also occupied the air was the delicious smell of pancakes, bacon, sausages, and fruits.
“Good Morning! I have something for you!” Mom said.
“What is it?” I said.
She disappeared into the kitchen. I watched all the people outside the studio, holding all their colorful signs. Although I was usually always starving in the morning, my stomach felt full and my heart grew warm. My mother walked in saying, “Whose hungry?” Instead of smiling at the food my mother brought in, I smiled at my mom. Watching the news wasn’t my favorite part of morning, but since coming from a family of 5, I cherished these mornings more than anything since they are the only mornings I have with my mother.
Once again, the commercials flew through the screen, but this time my mother picked me up and twirled me around the room. My mom spun me around, making the noise of an airplane and I giggled with laughter. I laughed even harder as she tried to dance. She goofily fell afterwards! We landed on the couch with exhaustion. We watched, again, the people outside the studio holding up signs.
“Someday, I’ll make sure we’ll be in the front row so everyone can see us,” mother said.
“What sign would you make?”
“I’d make a big colorful sign saying: ‘I love Adriela!’ and I’ll tape you to the sign so everyone can see you,” she said 7 years have passed and although I am older now, I still remember those mornings I had with my mother and I sunshine and laughter brought with her.
